Mott MacDonald in the New York City or New Jersey area is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer or EIT to join our dynamic North American team. You will work with experienced engineers on complex underground infrastructure projects, supported by mentorship and ongoing training.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering.
• 1+ years of full-time experience in relevant field.
• EIT candidate preferred but not required.
• Strong foundation in soil and/or rock mechanics, structural analysis, and underground construction.
• Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Plaxis, FLAC, or similar tools.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design and analysis of tunnel structures, shafts, caverns, and underground transit systems.
• Support geotechnical and structural assessments using numerical modeling and design software.
• Prepare technical reports, drawings, and specifications under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Participate in site investigations, inspections, and construction support activities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including geotechnical, civil, and environmental engineers.
• Contribute to sustainability and carbon-conscious design initiatives.
• Engage in internal knowledge-sharing and professional development programs.

Mott MacDonald is seeking a passionate and driven Geotechnical Engineer or (EIT) to join our dynamic NYC or NJ team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to some of the most complex and transformative underground infrastructure projects across North America. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, sustainable, and resilient tunnel solutions. As a Geotechnical Engineer, you’ll be supported through mentorship, technical training, and hands‑on project experience to help you grow into a confident and capable professional engineer.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the design and analysis of tunnel structures, shafts, caverns, and underground transit systems
• Support geotechnical and structural assessments using numerical modeling and design software

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering
• 1+ years of full‑time experience
• Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) perferred but not required
• Strong academic foundation in soil and/or rock mechanics, structural analysis, and underground construction
• Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Plaxis, FLAC, or similar tools
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Enthusiasm for working on complex infrastructure projects and learning from industry leaders

Preferred Experience:

• Exposure to tunnel excavation methods such as tunnel boring machines (TBM), NATM / SEM, or cut‑and‑cover methods
• Advanced degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering

The expected salary for this position is $81,000 - $90,000
