Job summary

Vertex is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Texas team, based in Conroe. The successful candidate will execute geotechnical projects across Texas, reporting to the Regional Manager of Geotechnical Engineering Services.

We value strong soil mechanics knowledge, field and lab data interpretation, and the ability to travel to site locations. Hybrid work arrangement is available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering; Master’s degree is a plus; P.E. preferred.
  • 5+ years of geotechnical engineering experience, Texas experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, geotechnical analysis.
  • Experience with field investigations and laboratory data interpretation.
  • Proficient in English; able to work independently within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and conduct geotechnical investigations and supervise fieldwork.
  • Perform slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, and foundation analyses.
  • Prepare geotechnical reports with recommendations for soils, foundations, and pavement design.
  • Provide construction-phase support and QA/QC of lab results.
  • Collaborate with clients, project managers, and contractors.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians.

OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for a Geotechnical Engineer. Successful candidate will work closely with our Vertex team throughout Texas and will be responsible for the technical execution of geotechnical projects within Texas. The candidate will report to the Regional Manager of Geotechnical Engineering Services.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Master’s degree is considered an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Texas, or the ability to obtain Texas licensure within an appropriate timeframe is preferred.
  • 5+ years of professional work experience in the field of geotechnical engineering, local Texas experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geotechnical analysis.
  • Experience in the use of commercially available software packages such as Slope/W, GINT, Plaxis, Uni-Settle, L-Pile, A-Pile as well as familiarity with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Google Earth and Microsoft products is required.
  • Familiarity with ASTM/AASHTO testing standards and Texas construction practices.
  • Experience with field investigation techniques such as soil logging (auger drilling, sonic drilling, etc.)
  • Experience interpreting field and laboratory geotechnical data.
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed and conduct occasional fieldwork.
  • Valid class C driver’s license in good standing
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordination and carrying out geotechnical investigations and supervising implementation of geotechnical designs and other construction monitoring services;
  • Conduct engineering assessments for slope instability. Have strong fundamentals on the concepts of landslide susceptibility, risk assessments, soil characteristics, factor of safety, and slip surfaces;
  • Plan and manage geotechnical investigations, including field exploration and subsurface characterization.
  • Perform foundation, settlement, bearing-capacity, slope-stability, retaining-wall, and earthwork analyses.
  • Provide recommendations for shallow and deep foundation systems, pavements, site grading, and ground improvement.
  • Provide construction-phase support, including observation, testing coordination, and resolution of geotechnical issues.
  • Develop recommendations for geotechnical instrumentation installation and monitoring;
  • Coordinate with drillers and geotechnical labs;
  • Travel for conducting site investigations in the field, when required;
  • Review, QA/QC, and assess lab results;
  • Technical report writing;
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project success;
  • Plan and supervise geotechnical field investigations (borings, SPT, test pits, etc.)
  • Analyze lab and field data to develop soil parameters
  • Prepare geotechnical reports including foundation recommendations, slope stability, settlement, retaining walls, and pavement design
  • Interface with clients, project managers, and contractors to provide engineering support during design and construction
  • Review construction submittals, perform site visits, and observe foundation installations as needed
  • Mentor junior engineers and field technicians
LOCATION
  • This position is based out of our Conroe, Texas office.
  • Vertex allows a hybrid structure for working from home.
  • The position is permanent and Full-time (40hrs/wk)
