Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a geotechnical engineer to support underground mine operations, providing geotechnical expertise for development, production, and rehabilitation. You will lead ground control design, monitoring, and QA/QC programs while coordinating with operations and technical services.

The role requires a Bachelor's in mining/geotechnical engineering and 4–8 years of underground mine experience. P.Eng. eligibility with EGBC is preferred; travel to remote camps may be required.

  • Master's degree is a nice-to-have asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide geotechnical and ground control support for underground mine operations.
  • Conduct underground inspections, damage mapping, field assessments, and condition reviews.
  • Perform stability assessments using multiple modelling methods.
  • Develop and review ground support designs and rehabilitation plans.
  • Review drill and blast designs and perform stope stability assessments.
  • Lead geotechnical hazard identification and risk assessments.
  • Lead ground support QA/QC programs including testing and verification.
  • Maintain geotechnical databases, mapping records and monitoring data.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Provide geotechnical and ground control support for underground mine operations, development, production, and rehabilitation
  • Conduct underground inspections, damage mapping, field assessments, and condition reviews
  • Perform stability assessments using empirical, analytical, observational, and numerical modelling methods
  • Develop and review ground support designs, cable bolt layouts, rehabilitation plans, and geotechnical work packages
  • Review drill and blast designs and perform stope stability assessments
  • Integrate rock mass characterization, structural geology, geotechnical logging, and mapping data into designs and risk assessments
  • Lead geotechnical hazard identification and risk assessments
  • Support geotechnical monitoring programs, instrumentation, convergence monitoring, seismic monitoring, inspections, and surveillance
  • Analyze monitoring data and develop and maintain Trigger Action Response Plans
  • Investigate geotechnical incidents, abnormal ground conditions, and ground support performance issues
  • Lead ground support quality assurance and quality control programs, including installation verification, pull testing, resin testing, shotcrete testing, and deficiency tracking
  • Manage and supervise geotechnical logging and mapping
  • Maintain geotechnical databases, mapping records, monitoring data, and ground support performance information
  • Coordinate geotechnical priorities with Mine Operations and Technical Services
  • Provide technical oversight of rehabilitation, cable bolting, shotcrete, instrumentation, and ground support QA activities
  • Reconcile geotechnical designs against excavation performance and recommend improvements
  • Participate in vendor evaluations, ground support trials, consultant coordination, and technology implementation
  • Provide geotechnical recommendations for short-, medium-, and long-range mine planning
  • Maintain and improve the Ground Control Management Plan, Ground Support Standards, and geotechnical procedures
  • Support and mentor Exploration and Technical Services staff
  • Review external consultant and contractor work
  • Communicate geotechnical recommendations and priorities to Operations and technical stakeholders
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant experience in underground geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, ground control, mine engineering, or geotechnical consulting
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible for immediate registration with EGBC
  • Experience in operating underground mines is highly preferred
  • Experience with geotechnical instrumentation, monitoring systems, ground support QA/QC programs, and rehabilitation planning is preferred
  • Willingness to work a two-week rotation schedule with 12-hour shifts per day at a remote camp
  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Rock Mechanics, or a related field is considered an asset
