Job summary

Turner Staffing Group seeks an Engineering Technician – Underground Geotechnical for a 3-month project supporting Technical Services in a mining client environment. Responsibilities include field observations, ground-control testing, and data collection for underground ground support systems.

Ideal candidates have underground mining experience and knowledge of rock bolts, shotcrete, fibercrete, and instrument monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Support underground geotechnical and ground-control activities.
  • Perform field observations and help identify ground hazards.
  • Support ground support inspections and compliance activities.
  • Assist with testing, monitoring, and data collection for underground ground support systems.
  • Perform shotcrete testing, including UCS, thickness, slump, and data entry.
  • Assist rock bolt testing and data collection; support instrumentation monitoring.
  • Maintain and inventory tools and technical supplies; ensure equipment readiness.
  • Work with engineering, operations, and site personnel; follow TARPs and safety rules.

Job description

Turner Staffing Group is seeking an Engineering Technician – Underground Geotechnical for a 3-month project supporting Technical Services with our mining client.

This position will work in an underground mining environment supporting geotechnical activities, ground support practices, field testing, monitoring, data collection, and general technical services activities. The ideal candidate will have underground mining experience and working knowledge of ground support systems, including rock bolts, cable bolts, shotcrete, and fibercrete.

This is a hands-on field position requiring a strong commitment to safe work practices, effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to perform work in an underground environment.

Responsibilities

Depending on experience, training, and site requirements, responsibilities may include:

  • Support underground geotechnical and ground-control activities.
  • Perform field observations and help identify potential ground hazards.
  • Support ground support compliance activities and inspections.
  • Assist with testing, monitoring, and data collection associated with underground ground support systems.
  • Perform shotcrete testing activities, which may include UCS testing, thickness testing, slump testing, sample preparation, and data entry.
  • Assist with rock bolt and ground support testing, including pull testing and related data collection.
  • Support instrumentation monitoring and the installation, monitoring, and maintenance of geotechnical instruments.
  • Assist with crack monitor installation and monitoring.
  • Support underground heading inspections and field observations as assigned.
  • Assist with ground support rehabilitation or damage mapping activities when required.
  • Enter and maintain technical and testing data in accordance with established processes.
  • Maintain, organize, and inventory tools, materials, and technical supplies.
  • Support instrument calibration and equipment readiness as assigned.
  • Participate in ground support trials and other Technical Services activities.
  • Follow site-specific safety procedures, supervisor instructions, and applicable Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs).
  • Maintain good housekeeping and safe work practices throughout the assignment.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, operations, and other site personnel.
Required / Preferred Experience
  • Underground mining experience with knowledge of ground support systems, including rock bolts, cable bolts, shotcrete, and fibercrete.
  • Familiarity with shotcrete/concrete application and underground ground support practices.
  • Strong safety focus and ability to recognize and appropriately respond to underground ground hazards.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and supervisor direction.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work in an underground mining environment.
  • Ability to work the assigned rotating schedule.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions associated with a field-based underground position.
Experience with one or more of the following is beneficial:
  • Ground support compliance audits
  • Geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring
  • Shotcrete or concrete testing
  • Rock bolt testing
  • Underground heading inspections
  • Geotechnical data collection and reporting
  • Deswik or similar mining software
  • Underground mobile equipment
Training & Safety

Candidates must meet applicable site training and authorization requirements. The supporting position documentation identifies 40-hour MSHA or MSHA Experienced Miner training, as applicable, and site-specific underground training within the Geotechnical Technician progression framework.

Safety is a core responsibility of this position. The selected candidate will be expected to follow all applicable safety, environmental, site, and operational procedures throughout the assignment.

Assignment Details

This is a temporary staffing assignment anticipated to last approximately three months. The position is scheduled to work a 5x4 / 4x4 rotation

Assignment duration, schedule, duties, and other working conditions may be adjusted based on operational requirements.

Work Authorization

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
