Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is seeking a leader for the Regional Production Group’s Geotechnical Design Unit. You will oversee complex projects for roads and bridges, supervise staff, review and seal geotechnical designs, and ensure compliance with SCDOT standards.

You will provide technical support to construction offices, address slope stability, settlement, liquefaction, and mitigation design, and coordinate with internal teams on policies, software, and training.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 5 years of engineering experience.
• PE license from SC State Board is required.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Regional Production Group’s Geotechnical Design Unit and oversee complex civil engineering projects for roads and bridges.
• Supervise and develop staff; review and seal geotechnical designs and technical documents; ensure compliance with SCDOT standards; manage project schedules and deliverables.
• Provide technical support to construction offices and expert guidance on geotechnical challenges (slope stability, settlement, liquefaction, mitigation design).
• Coordinate with internal engineering support teams on policies, research, software, and training; provide expert testimony when required.
• Manage geotechnical on-call work orders and consultant contracts, including scopes of services, fee estimates, evaluations, and contract documentation.

Minimum Education and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree in engineering and five (5) years of engineering work experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
