Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Geoscience Trainee to learn the roles and responsibilities of a Geoscientist while protecting soil and groundwater resources across the Commonwealth.

The one-year program covers contamination investigation, source identification, data analysis, and report preparation, with opportunities to engage with officials and community groups. Travel is required; telework up to 3 days per week may be available.

Qualifications

• Active Geologist-in-Training certificate or near graduation with qualifying credits.
• Bachelor's degree in geology or closely related field with 30 geologic credits.
• Equivalent combination including 30 geologic credits.

Responsibilities

• Contamination Investigation: hydrogeologic studies of pollution incidents and spills.
• Source Identification: determine origins and remedial actions.
• Data Analysis: interpret hydrogeologic data from fieldwork and labs.
• Report Preparation: write memorandums with maps and illustrations.
• Technical Review: evaluate reports and make recommendations under laws.
• Public Communication: explain hydrogeologic principles to officials and groups.

Education

Geologist-in-Training certificate

Bachelor's degree in geology/geophysics/geochemistry/engineering geology

3 months to graduation window for qualifying degree/credits
