Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan's Safford, AZ location seeks a Geologist I to support drilling campaigns, perform logging, mapping, sampling, and contribute to resource block models under supervision.

You will log drill samples, map geology, and assist in developing exploration records. A geology degree is required with travel up to 50%; Python/Leapfrog Geo are a plus, enabling growth in a collaborative, safety-focused team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geology or closely related field.
• No experience required.
• Willingness to travel up to 50%.
• Ability to interpret geological data and mineralogy.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, log drill samples, map geology, sample and assist in resource block modeling.
• Log core and RC drill cuttings.
• Geologic mapping of surface and underground areas.
• Interpret geological data into cross sections and level plans.
• Work with team to complete computerized resource block models.
• Prepare and update drill hole databases and exploration records.
• Perform rock chip sampling or soil surveys.
• Perform other duties as required.

Where You Will Work

In operation since 2007, Safford operations is a zero-discharge facility and one of the most sustainable mines in the United States. The operation’s commitment to utilizing advanced technologies and sustainable practices strongly emphasizes safety and environmental stewardship. Located in southeastern Arizona, close to more than 4 million acres of national forest, employees and their families can connect with the great outdoors while fishing, rafting, hiking and more. Several educational institutions also are nearby, including a Northern Arizona University satellite campus, Eastern Arizona College, and the Gila Institute for Technology.

What You Will Do

• Under supervision of a Senior Geologist,complete logging of drill samples, geologic mapping, sampling and assist in the completion of resource block models.
• Perform logging of core and reverse circulation drill cuttings.
• Perform geologic mapping of surface and underground areas.
• Assist Senior Geologist with the interpretation of all geological data (e.g., rock type, alteration and structure), assay, and mineralogical data into internally consistent cross sections and level plans.
• Work with a team of Geologists in the completion of computerized resource block models that meet corporate modeling standards.
• Prepare and update drill hole database, maps of deposits and other exploration records.
• Perform rock chip sampling or soil surveys.
• Perform other duties as required.

• Ability to correctly identify and accurately estimate relative proportions and textural characteristics of metal-bearing and gangue minerals in a production setting.

What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently $75,000-$104,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
