Job summary

Capstone Copper Pinto Valley in Globe-Miami, AZ is seeking a Geology Technician I to perform sampling, core cutting and labeling, and assist with ore control.

This field-heavy role requires safety leadership, basic surveying, data entry into geological databases, and collaboration with geologists during drilling campaigns.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in drilling operations is a plus.
  • Soil or rock sampling experience.
  • Experience operating mobile equipment (e.g., forklift).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience performing equipment inspections.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and acQuire.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate safety leadership and safety consciousness.
  • Technical and accurate sampling of blast holes using up-to-date procedures.
  • Basic survey abilities for picking up and laying out blast holes.
  • Manage sample inventory and related warehouse material safely.
  • Enter basic information into computer geological database.
  • Ensure duplicates are labeled and identified for labs.
  • Ensure timely shipments to laboratories and complete required forms.
  • Support ore control activities and grade monitoring in production areas.

Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

Position Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate safety leadership and safety consciousness
  • Technical and accurate sampling of blast holes using the most up to date procedures
  • Basic survey abilities for picking up and laying out blast holes
  • Manage sample inventory and related warehouse material safely and without damage to property and/or process
  • Enter basic information into computer geological database
  • Ensures duplicate samples are correctly labeled and that both the original and the duplicate are identified accordingly for laboratory staff
  • Ensures timely shipments to laboratories and accurately completes required forms
  • Ability to identify naming and numbering errors in sample handling procedures
  • Perform core cutting, labeling, and organization of drill core
  • Take high-quality core photographs and maintain proper records
  • Conduct density measurements and assist with sample preparation for assays
  • Support ore control activities and grade monitoring in production areas
  • Assist geologists during drilling campaigns and field activities
  • Participate in a rotating roster schedule
  • Performs other duties as required
Position Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Experience in drilling operations is a plus
  • Soil or rock sampling experience
  • Experience operating mobile equipment i.e., forklift
  • Ability to lift/handle/load/stack up to fifty (50) pound sample bags
  • Experience performing equipment inspections
  • Ability to work outdoors and in ambient weather conditions
  • Able to use a variety of computer software applications, especially Microsoft Office and acQuire
  • Well organized and self-motivated
  • Valid State Driver's License
  • Able to speak, comprehend, read, and write English
Preferred
  • Experience in drilling operations.

90% of the Geology Technician I’s time will be spent in the field while the remaining 10% will be spent in an office environment.

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required. Capstone maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
