Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a Staff Scientist or Research Consultant in Bioinformatics and Genomic Reference Catalogue Development. You will lead the development of large-scale genomic reference catalogues by acquiring, curating, and expanding FASTA resources from public repositories and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, genomics, data science, or related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and Unix shell scripting.
  • Experience with genomic sequence data and FASTA-based resources.
  • Experience developing automated and reproducible computational workflows.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git.
  • Familiarity with HPC environments and queue-management systems such as Slurm.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong written and spoken English.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and acquire genomes and FASTA resources from public repositories and initiatives.
  • Build, curate, document, version, and expand large-scale reference catalogues.
  • Develop automated workflows for resource discovery, processing, quality control, and catalogue construction.
  • Assess sequence and assembly quality, contamination, and taxonomic inconsistencies.
  • Curate, adapt, and develop small bioinformatic programs for various tasks.
  • Process very large sequence collections using HPC systems.
  • Collaborate to meet scientific needs of environmental DNA, ancient DNA, metagenomics, and biodiversity research.
  • Contribute to software development and computational analyses within the informatics group.
