Position Type: Full-Time (40 Hours/Week)

FTE Allocation: 0.4 FTE Mercy Kids Autism Center | 0.6 FTE Child Neurology (including inpatient pediatric coverage)

Overview

Mercy is seeking a compassionate and highly skilled Genetic Counselor to join our multidisciplinary pediatric team at the Mercy Kids Center for Neurodevelopment and Mercy Kids Autism Center. This position plays a vital role in providing genetic counseling services across autism, pediatric neurology, and inpatient pediatric populations.

This is a critical role supporting multiple departments with no current backup coverage. We are seeking a qualified professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about improving patient outcomes through genetic services.

Key Responsibilities
Genetic Counseling & Patient Care
  • Provide genetic counseling, education, and risk assessment for patients and families.
  • Obtain and evaluate medical and family histories to identify inherited conditions and genetic risks.
  • Educate patients and families about genetic conditions, testing options, results, and recommended follow-up care.
  • Facilitate informed decision-making regarding genetic testing and treatment options.
  • Provide ambulatory and virtual counseling services as appropriate.
Coordination of Services
  • Coordinate genetic testing and related services, including laboratory studies, blood work, amniocentesis, screening, and diagnostic testing.
  • Maintain communication with physicians, laboratories, and patients to ensure timely completion of testing and follow-up.
  • Monitor outstanding and pending test results and ensure results are communicated appropriately.
  • Assist with care coordination across outpatient and inpatient pediatric settings.
Documentation & Communication
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records and documentation.
  • Prepare consultation summaries and communicate recommendations to referring providers and families.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary care teams.
  • Support timely and accurate billing by communicating patient encounters and services rendered.
Education & Program Development
  • Develop and update patient education materials and resources.
  • Participate in educational activities for residents, medical students, and healthcare staff.
  • Stay current with emerging developments in genetics and genomic medicine.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, quality initiatives, and program development.
Research & Quality Improvement
  • Support clinical research initiatives through patient recruitment, data collection, and project participation.
  • Participate in quality improvement efforts and implementation of best practices.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and practice standards.
Safety & Compliance
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with applicable regulations and Mercy policies.
  • Adhere to safety, infection prevention, and environmental standards.
  • Promote a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
Qualifications
Required Education
  • Master's degree (MS/MA) in Genetic Counseling or Human/Medical Genetics.
Required Licensure/Certification
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG).
  • Board-eligible candidates must sit for and successfully pass their certification examination at the earliest available opportunity following graduation.
