General Manager - Commercial HVAC & Mechanical Services
We need an operator, not a caretaker.
This is a commercial mechanical business in central Ohio. Service is the backbone, with a strong construction arm beside it, about half and half today. One location, focused on the Columbus market, with a team of more than fifty: sales, project managers, service, technicians, and admin. The plan is to double the business in the next three to five years.
It sits inside a fast-growing, multi-region HVAC and building services platform. You run the business locally, with the systems, support, and scale of a national organization behind you. Your business, your playbook.
What you will actually do
- Own the full P&L across service and construction. Pricing, margin, forecasting, cost control, and where the resources go.
- Build the annual plan and hit it: revenue, margin, customer growth, and operational execution.
- Hire, coach, and keep a high-performing team across service, projects, sales, and support. You decide who joins.
- Turn field, dispatch, office, and corporate support into one accountable team, and make this the place the best people in the market want to work.
- Run the business on the numbers. KPIs, dashboards, and operating reviews that drive real decisions, backed by a data analytics rollout built to help you run your unit.
- Win work. Partner with customers and the commercial team to grow new and existing accounts.
- Hold the standard on safety, quality, service delivery, project performance, and customer experience.
- Work across the platform to share what works and put the scale to use.
What this job is not
This is not a babysitting gig, and it is not a title on top of someone else's business. You will be as comfortable in a boardroom as on a job site, and you will be measured on what this business delivers.
What you need to have done
- Led in commercial HVAC, mechanical services, or a related field service business for 7-10+ years, with real responsibility for results.
- Grown a branch, region, or business unit and improved profitability while you did it. Be ready to show us how.
- Owned the full P&L, not a slice of it: sales, operations, and billing. Service leadership is the anchor here. If you came up in construction, you need real service depth to go with it.
- Recruited, coached, and developed strong teams, not just inherited them.
- Led from the front, with the credibility to connect with technicians, managers, and customers alike.
- High emotional intelligence. You engage people one on one and as a team, you ask for feedback and act on it, and you coach before you cut.
- A leader first. You do not need to be an engineer or a technician, but you need to understand how a commercial service business makes money.
- Experience inside a PE-backed company is a plus. So is a track record of building something, not just maintaining it.
What we pay
- A strong compensation package. We share the numbers directly and in confidence.
- Real relocation support for the right leader.
- Comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and a 401(k) with company match.
Where this goes
The platform is expanding fast, including a build-out in building controls, and this business has room to grow beyond Columbus within the state. Leaders who grow their business here have room to grow with it.
