The role focuses on running highly efficient, fast-moving service, maintenance, and installation departments, directing overall business operations, financial performance, and project execution for HVAC, plumbing, piping, and mechanical service.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management: Oversee day-to-day business operations, project delivery, shop/fabrication management, and field safety protocols.
- Financial Oversight: Develop annual operating budgets, manage P&L (profit and loss), track job-costing metrics, and ensure profitability targets are met.
- Sales & Growth Strategy: Lead sales functions, drive regional business development goals, and build emerging construction or service trades.
- Team Leadership: Mentor project managers, department heads, and skilled tradespeople while managing recruitment, training, and performance.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintenance Agreement Growth: Drive the sales, renewal, and pricing strategies for commercial preventative maintenance contracts.
- Dispatch & Fleet Efficiency: Oversee dispatch teams and GPS routing to maximize the daily billable hours of field technicians.
- Service P&L Management: Manage financial performance based on high-margin service tickets, hourly labor rates, and parts markups.
- On-Call Operations: Direct 24/7 emergency response protocols and rotating schedules for field service crews.
Technical & Operational Focus
- Asset Management: Ensure accurate tracking of client equipment history, warranty statuses, and life-cycle replacements.
- Service Software Proficiency: Manage field service management (FSM) software tools like ServiceTitan, Jonas, or FieldEdge.
- Technician Safety & Training: Lead regular safety tool-box talks and technical training sessions on diverse HVAC/plumbing equipment.
- Quoting & Small Projects: Oversee the rapid quoting and execution of equipment change-outs or repairs found during maintenance visits.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 10 years of commercial mechanical contractor or construction management experience.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of commercial HVAC, piping, plumbing systems, and local building codes.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, or equivalent field experience.
- Skills: Strong leadership, financial analysis, contract negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience: 8 years managing a service department or branch for a mechanical, HVAC, or plumbing contractor.
- Client Relations: Excellent skills in conflict resolution and managing long-term relationships with commercial property managers.
- Workforce Management: Proven ability to recruit, motivate, and retain skilled journeymen and service technicians in a competitive market.
