About The Role
The client is seeking a General Manager to lead and grow its family portrait and tourism photography operations on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The client photographs visiting families and couples at beaches and resorts and operates two connected businesses:
  • Beach portrait sessions and resort partnerships
  • Luau photography operations
This is not a desk job. The role is approximately:
  • 50% business operations and team leadership
  • 30% resort partnerships and revenue growth
  • 20% photography, guest experience, and coverage
If you only want to manage, this is not the role. If you only want to photograph, this is not the role.
What You Will Own
Grow Resort Partnerships
  • Build relationships with resort leadership, concierge teams, activity desks, and frontline staff.
  • Increase bookings, referrals, visibility, and revenue from existing resort partners.
  • Help launch and grow new resort partnerships.
  • Track resort-sourced bookings and identify where revenue is being lost.
Run the Operation
  • Own the schedule across beach sessions, resort coverage, and luau photography.
  • Maintain service quality during peak season and improve systems during shoulder season.
  • Solve staffing, coverage, equipment, weather, and guest-experience issues quickly.
  • Build checklists, workflows, and standards that allow the team to perform without constant supervision.
Lead the Team
  • Hire, train, schedule, coach, and retain a team of approximately 10.
  • Set clear expectations for photographers, sales associates, editors, and luau staff.
  • Give direct feedback and address weak performance quickly.
  • Create a culture of professionalism, urgency, hospitality, and accountability.
Own the Numbers
You Will Be Measured On
  • Resort-sourced portrait revenue
  • Total portrait revenue
  • Session volume
  • Average order value
  • Upsell conversion
  • Labor cost
  • Luau profitability
  • Guest satisfaction and reviews
  • Partner satisfaction
  • Team retention and performance
Photograph When Needed
  • Personally shoot portrait sessions and VIP clients.
  • Fill coverage gaps during peak periods.
  • Maintain strong image quality and brand standards.
  • Review and improve culling, editing, and delivery workflows.
Compensation
  • Monthly revenue milestone bonus
  • Quarterly Business Metrics KPI bonus
  • Standard photographer compensation for sessions personally shot
  • Uncapped upside as the resort portrait channel grows
The plan is intentionally simple: grow profitable portrait revenue, and you participate directly in the growth you create. The luau operation is part of your leadership responsibility, but your major upside comes from expanding the portrait business.
The Right Person Consistently Demonstrates These 10 Traits
  • Ownership - Takes responsibility for outcomes and follows through without being chased.
  • Results Orientation - Has a track record of improving revenue, profit, service quality, or team performance.
  • Action Orientation - Moves quickly, solves problems, and turns decisions into completed work.
  • True Partner - Can earn trust with resort executives, concierge teams, vendors, and employees.
  • Customer Focus - Protects the guest experience and converts feedback into better operations.
  • Operational Discipline - Builds systems, checklists, schedules, and processes that reduce mistakes and owner dependence.
  • Commercial Judgment - Understands revenue, margin, labor cost, capacity, pricing, and tradeoffs.
  • Team Leadership - Can hire, coach, motivate, and hold people accountable to clear standards.
  • Candid Communication - Gives direct feedback, surfaces bad news early, and handles conflict professionally.
  • Resilience and Adaptability - Performs under pressure during peak season, staffing gaps, weather disruptions, and changing partner demands.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years leading a team in hospitality, tourism, retail, photography, events, or another seasonal service business.
  • Experience owning measurable revenue or operating targets.
  • Strong portrait portfolio, especially families, couples, children, beach, or natural-light photography.
  • Fast, confident Lightroom workflow.
  • Comfortable reading a P&L and diagnosing missed targets.
  • Strong scheduling, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to work across the Kohala Coast and Kona.
  • Availability for weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings.
Nice to Have
  • Existing Big Island resort, hotel, luau, or tourism relationships.
  • GoHighLevel or comparable CRM experience.
  • Consultative sales experience.
  • Experience with AI culling or editing tools.
  • Experience managing a multi-unit photography, wedding/event, tour, or hospitality operation.
What to Expect
The client's seasonality is real. July can run roughly three times the volume of February. Summer is intense. Shoulder season is when the team repairs systems, trains the team, improves partnerships, and prepares for the next surge.
The client is a small, growing company. There is no HR department and no large corporate support structure. You will have real authority, real responsibility, and a direct impact on the business and the success of the team.
