Job description

Position Summary

Lawson State Community College is accepting applications for part-time groundskeepers.This is an applicant pool. Individuals will be hired as needed. Note: Submitted applications will remain on file for 36 months.

The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of skilled technician duties, including electrical, mechanical, carpentry, and HVAC in the maintenance and repair of college facilities and equipment. The technician reports to the Director of Facilities and assists in ensuring effective plant operations and facility upkeep.

Salary Schedule Placement

Local Salary Schedule $15.30/hour with a maximum of 19 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Inspect buildings, electrical systems, grounds, and equipment to ensure safe, operational conditions; identify hazards, defects, and needed repairs.
  2. Maintain, repair, and install equipment and fixtures in campus buildings.
  3. Perform minor troubleshooting and repairs; replace light bulbs, ballasts, and fuses.
  4. Repair and/or replace electrical outlets, switches, covers, etc.
  5. Perform routine preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on HVAC systems; lubricate bearings, change filters and belts, adjust thermostats.
  6. Assist other skilled technicians (electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC technicians) with repairs and installations.
  7. Identify and perform basic service and repair on plumbing fixtures and appliances; clear clogged lines and drains.
  8. Assist in moving and storage of plant equipment, furniture, and supplies.
  9. Perform minor painting, drywall repair, ceiling tile replacement, and light carpentry.
  10. Operate vehicles, machinery, and tools including maintenance fleet, forklift, buffers, saws, drills, and hand tools.
  11. Assemble classroom and office equipment and furniture.
  12. Assist in setting up and preparing facilities for meetings or events.
  13. Follow procedures and safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and chemicals.
  14. Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  15. Complete work orders promptly.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; an associate degree is preferred.
  • Two years of full-time related work experience.
  • Valid Alabama Driver’s License; insurable by the college’s insurance.
  • EPA refrigerant recovery certification (preferred).

  1. Basic computer skills.
  2. Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  3. Ability to work with tools and power equipment.
  4. Detail-oriented with problem-solving skills.
  5. Ability to handle machinery and move heavy equipment.
  6. Effective oral and written communication skills.
Required Licenses and Certifications

Valid Alabama Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Physical Demands
  • Work extended hours during peak times.
  • Bend, stoop, climb, reach, push, pull for prolonged periods.
  • Lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and chemical safety.
