The General Maintenance Technician Program Instructor delivers employer-sponsored workforce development training to incumbent workers preparing for a General Maintenance Technician role in a large-scale retail facility environment. Learners are working adults whose employer has contracted StrataTech to build the foundational technical competency, professional judgment, and workplace practices required to perform in the role independently and safely.

This is a nine-module program delivered across virtual and hands‑on lab environments. Virtual modules are delivered synchronously in two sessions per week. Lab weeks are four consecutive days of hands‑on instruction at ten hours per day. The instructor is the primary instructional presence across both modalities and is accountable for delivering the assigned curriculum at standard in each.

The program builds competency across six outcome areas: workplace safety and energy control, foundational tool, math, measurement and documentation skills, facility systems knowledge, inspection and preventive maintenance procedures, professional technician practices, and pathway awareness across the General Maintenance, HVAC/R, and Exterior Services tracks. The instructor delivers all six. This is not a single-discipline position.

The curriculum is developed by the B2B curriculum team and delivered as designed. Content is not substituted or modified without approval from the B2B Lead Instructor or the Senior Director, Enterprise Training Operations.

Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum Delivery

  • Deliver the assigned program curriculum across all nine modules in synchronous virtual sessions and in-person lab environments with technical accuracy and instructional clarity.
  • Follow the curriculum as designed. Content is not substituted, condensed, or modified without approval from the B2B Lead Instructor or the Senior Director, Enterprise Training Operations.
  • Deliver virtual sessions with the same preparation and engagement standard as in-person lab sessions. Synchronous virtual is not passive lecture, it is active instruction.
  • Prepare for every session in advance. For lab days, equipment must be operational, stations must be set up, and materials must be staged before the first learner arrives.
  • Adapt delivery to adult learners who bring prior field experience. Connect program content to the equipment, systems, and situations learners encounter in their facilities.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, participation, and progress records in Canvas for every session.
  • Complete all required documentation, reporting, and administrative tasks accurately and on time.

Safety and Energy Control Instruction

  • Deliver the safety and energy control content module with the depth and seriousness it requires. This is not orientation content, it is the foundation every other module builds on.
  • Facilitate hands‑on LOTO practice stations with direct observation and correction. Every learner must demonstrate the correct energy‑control sequence under supervised conditions before the module closes.
  • Enforce all lab safety protocols, PPE requirements, and OSHA standards, without exception, in every lab session. Stop unsafe work immediately regardless of schedule pressure.
  • Model and reinforce stop‑work authority throughout the program, not only in the safety module. Learners should see it practiced, not just discussed.

Technical Content Delivery

  • Deliver foundational math and measurement instruction. Learners apply fractions, decimals, percentages, unit conversions, area, and volume calculations to real maintenance tasks throughout the program.
  • Facilitate technical literacy and electrical foundations content, including equipment nameplates, technical diagrams, ladder schematics, electrical theory, and component identification.
  • Deliver plumbing foundations content. Learners must be able to recognize and describe water supply, DWV, and condensate systems, and identify common components, conditions, and isolation procedures.
  • Facilitate the hands‑on electrical measurement. Learners apply Ohm’s Law and use a multimeter to measure voltage, current, and resistance on approved training circuits, and trace series and parallel circuit paths.
  • Deliver systems, inspections, and preventive maintenance content. Facilitate the guided facility system walkdown, hands‑on inspection practice stations, and approved PM task execution.
  • Facilitate scenario‑based instruction through the full verify‑confirm‑identify‑check‑decide‑document sequence.
  • Facilitate work order execution and documentation instruction across planning, execution, verification, and professional closeout.

Pathway Exposure Delivery

  • Deliver HVAC/R pathway awareness content. The content covers the refrigeration cycle, major mechanical components, non‑invasive measurement tasks, symptom recognition, and escalation judgment. This is an awareness and recognition track.
  • Facilitate condenser coil visual inspections, identify compressor operation, measure temperature rise and drop across condenser and evaporator, and evaluate space temperature and humidity levels.
  • Deliver Exterior Services pathway awareness. This content covers exterior and grounds equipment recognition, seasonal task awareness, and exterior inspection routine.
  • Present the three pathway options during training; General Maintenance, HVAC/R, and Exterior Services accurately and without bias so learners can make an informed pathway decision at program close.

Student Engagement and Outcomes

  • Hold learners to the standard the program requires across all nine modules. These are incumbent workers being assessed for a technical role.
  • Identify learners who are falling behind and intervene early. Do not surface the issue at a final competency check.
  • Provide clear, specific, and actionable feedback throughout the program. Feedback at the final assessment only is not sufficient for a workforce development program at this scale.
  • Administer all competency checks, quizzes, assignments, and capstone assessments with integrity and grade against the defined rubric.
  • Document and report student performance, attendance, and outcomes in Canvas on the schedule the program requires.

Professional Conduct and Client Representation

  • Conduct yourself as a representative of StrataTech in every interaction; in virtual sessions, in lab environments, on client or employer property, and in written communication.
  • Comply with all site access, security, and safety requirements for lab delivery locations.
  • Communicate with client‑side personnel professionally and within the scope of your instructional role. Escalate questions or concerns about the program, the client relationship, or learner conduct to the B2B Lead Instructor.
  • Raise equipment issues, scheduling conflicts, and learner concerns proactively. Avoid surfacing problems the day before delivery.
  • Keep written communication with learners, client personnel, and StrataTech leadership professional, clear, and within role scope.

Attendance and Reliability

  • Be present and ready to instruct for every scheduled virtual session and every lab day. Learner employers track session delivery and program pace.
  • Communicate absences and scheduling conflicts at the first point of awareness. Lab weeks cannot be postponed without significant program impact.
  • Travel to lab delivery sites as assigned. Lab locations may include StrataTech campuses and client or employer training facilities.
  • Stay current on the technical content delivered across all program modules. The program spans safety, electrical, plumbing, HVAC/R awareness, exterior services awareness, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Maintain any certifications or credentials required for the assigned program content. Credentials must be current before first delivery, (OSHA 10- General, NFPA 70E, EPA 608).
  • Seek and apply feedback on instructional delivery. Participate in required observations, calibration sessions, and StrataTech instructor development activities.
  • Support onboarding of new instructors assigned to this program when requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five or more years of hands‑on field experience in commercial or light industrial facility maintenance, including direct experience with electrical systems, plumbing systems, or HVAC/R equipment. Experience must span more than one technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical content clearly to adult learners with varying levels of prior experience. Field experience alone does not constitute instructional readiness.
  • Ability to deliver instruction effectively in a synchronous virtual environment. Comfort with Microsoft Teams or a comparable video conferencing platform and with managing learner engagement across a camera.
  • EPA 608 Universal certification. Current and active at time of hire. Required before first delivery of HVAC/R pathway content.
  • NFPA 70E electrical safety awareness or equivalent. Current and active at time of hire.
  • Consistent track record of professional conduct in a field, technical, or structured work environment.
  • Ability to facilitate hands‑on lab environments including equipment operation, safety enforcement, and learner observation and correction.
  • Proficiency with basic digital tools including a learning management system, video conferencing platform, and documentation tools.
  • Ability to travel to lab delivery sites as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior instructional, training delivery, or apprenticeship instruction experience in a technical trade, industrial maintenance, or workforce development setting.
  • Experience delivering training to incumbent workers in a large‑scale retail, distribution, or commercial facilities environment.
  • Journeyman‑level or higher credential in electrical, HVAC/R, or a related mechanical trade.
  • Experience facilitating both virtual instructor‑led training and hands‑on lab sessions within the same program.
  • Familiarity with commercial HVAC/R systems common in large retail facilities, including rooftop units and refrigeration/freezer units.
  • Experience with Canvas or a comparable LMS.
  • Prior work in a B2B, enterprise, or client‑site training environment.

People Responsibilities:

  • This position has no direct reports.

Physical Environment:

  • Work is performed in classroom, lab, shop, and client facility environments, which may include varying temperatures, noise, and other conditions typical of an industrial or training setting.
  • Incumbent may be required to stand, walk, stoop, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods.
  • Incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as applicable to the work environment.
  • Incumbent may sit for periods of time at a desk or computer terminal and use a computer, telephone, and other standard office or instructional equipment.
  • Travel to client sites and other campuses is required as assigned.
