Job summary

Cottage Inn by the Sea in Pismo Beach is seeking a General Maintenance Engineer I to help keep the oceanfront hotel running smoothly and safely for guests and staff. This hands-on role includes routine repairs, preventative maintenance, and responding to maintenance requests across guest rooms and public spaces.

You will work alongside the Engineering team to ensure high-quality workmanship and a safe environment.

Qualifications

• Experience in maintenance, facilities, or related field.
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine next steps.
• Comfortable using common hand and power tools.
• Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and varied shifts.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs in guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests from guests and staff.
• Troubleshoot basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and building issues.
• Complete preventative maintenance to keep equipment and systems operating.
• Inspect areas for maintenance needs and communicate required actions.
• Maintain a clean, safe, organized engineering workspace.
• Operate and care for maintenance tools and equipment.
• Support pool, mechanical, laundry, and other hotel equipment maintenance.
• Follow safety procedures and standards.
• Document completed work and communicate needs to Engineering team.
• Collaborate with Housekeeping, Front Office, and other departments to support guest experience.
• Assist with special projects and property improvements.

ABOUT THE PROPERTY

Located along the scenic bluffs of Pismo Beach, Cottage Inn by the Sea is a charming oceanfront hotel inspired by the English countryside, offering beautiful Pacific Ocean views and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. The 80-room property features cozy accommodations with fireplaces, an oceanfront heated pool and spa, outdoor fire pits, and Bluff Bistro for casual dining overlooking the water. Just a short walk from the Pismo Beach Pier and downtown, Cottage Inn provides an inviting home base for enjoying the beaches, Central Coast wineries, and other nearby attractions.

THE ROLE

As a General Maintenance Engineer I, you’ll help keep the hotel running smoothly, safely, and comfortably for our guests and team. This is a hands-on role where you’ll respond to maintenance needs, perform preventative upkeep, and troubleshoot issues throughout the property. You’ll:

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs throughout guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces
• Respond promptly to guest and team member maintenance requests
• Troubleshoot and address basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general building issues
• Complete preventative maintenance to help keep equipment and hotel systems operating properly
• Inspect rooms and common areas for maintenance needs and report issues requiring additional attention
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized engineering workspace and property
• Operate and care for maintenance tools and equipment properly
• Support pool, mechanical, laundry, and other hotel equipment maintenance as needed
• Follow safety procedures and applicable building, fire, and health standards
• Document completed work and communicate outstanding maintenance needs to the Engineering team
• Work collaboratively with Housekeeping, Front Office, and other departments to support the overall guest experience
• Assist with special projects, property improvements, and other maintenance needs as assigned

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• Previous maintenance, engineering, facilities, construction, or related experience preferred
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general building maintenance
• Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine appropriate next steps
• Comfortable using common hand and power tools
• Strong attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship
• Ability to prioritize multiple requests and respond appropriately to urgent needs
• Dependable, hands-on, and willing to jump in wherever help is needed
• Strong communication and a professional, guest-focused approach
• Ability to work independently while also being a collaborative team member
• Commitment to safety and proper handling of tools, equipment, and maintenance materials
