The General Liability Claims Manager plays a key role in overseeing, training, and evaluating staff to ensure the achievement of departmental goals and adherence to established policies, procedures, and protocols. This position manages claims from the general liability (GL) product line, supervises a claims unit, and ensures appropriate claim handling processes, technical oversight, performance assessments, and other responsibilities within the GL department.

Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the investigation and processing of General Liability claims, providing guidance to GL adjusters.
  2. Develop and implement policies and procedures for the department.
  3. Facilitate reporting to excess/reinsurance carriers.
  4. Perform audits of claim files and manage claim diary directions.
  5. Lead and develop the team to ensure high performance.
  6. Coordinate large loss reporting, monitor legal calendars, and verify defense representation.
  7. Respond to policyholders and agents regarding questions and complaints; participate in account visits and meetings.
  8. Review and approve reserves, transfers, and settlements; manage expenses following best practices.
  9. Participate in hiring, assign duties, set goals, coach, and evaluate staff performance.
  10. Mentor adjusters, oversee litigation results, hearings, mediations, and ensure timely claims processing.
  11. Engage in professional development in general liability regulations and best practices relevant to the Southeast and other states.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  2. CPCU or JD and/or designation is a plus.
  3. 10+ years in claims handling, including 2+ years in management or lead roles.
  4. Knowledge of state laws, fiduciary guidelines, claims policies, contracts, and reinsurance agreements.
  5. Interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and customer service.
  6. Ability to work independently and communicate transparently with leadership.
  7. Proficiency in fostering positive culture, leadership, analysis, time management, negotiation, and project management.
  8. Ability to present to stakeholders and maintain confidentiality.
  9. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant software applications.
