Texas Department of Transportation Bryan District in Grimes County Maintenance Office, Navasota, is seeking a General Engineering Tech I to support transportation engineering operations and maintenance. Responsibilities

  • Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees.
  • Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.
  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Monitors bridge inspection consultant activities and assists with coding as needed.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Responsibilities

Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.

Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
