Job summary

TxDOT's Paris District in Lamar County seeks a General Engineering Tech I to perform and coordinate advanced transportation engineering support and maintenance tasks, including inspection, material testing, and documentation. The role involves a mix of field and office work with opportunities to lead project aspects.

You will work in the Lamar County Maintenance Section in Paris, TX, contributing to road safety and asset preservation.

Qualifications

  • College education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials and records results.
  • Inspects barricades and traffic control devices for compliance with standards.

Job description

Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:
  • Administers construction and/or bridge inspection record-keeping activities in a District Area Office.
  • Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains files of shop drawings and monitors progress of construction activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
