Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The General Dentist (GD) is a key member of the dental department. The GD will perform general dentist duties and work as part of a team to provide high-quality dental care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All duties should be performed with excellence, high integrity, and in accordance with the Dental Practice Act of California.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality dental services to NAHC’s beneficiary population, including preventive health screenings and oral health education.
- Adhere to the dental visit model of NAHC; proactively teach Dental Assistants, see members on time, and communicate barriers to supervisors.
- Provide complete dental examinations and treatment planning.
- Read and interpret dental radiographs to ensure member understanding.
- Read and interpret dental lab results (e.g., biopsy) within 24 hours and communicate findings to members as necessary.
- Provide dental prophylactic treatment and topical fluoride treatment.
- Accurately diagnose and thoroughly treat dental illnesses, diseases, and disorders.
- Perform extractions, surgical procedures, endodontics, prosthetics, periodontics, and restorative services within your scope of experience.
- Refer members for specialized dental care as needed.
- Instruct members on post-dental treatment care, diet, medication, and oral hygiene.
- Address patients’ questions and perform procedures considering their comfort levels.
- Obtain member’s final impressions.
- Record basic medical and dental histories and update patient registration information.
- Perform necessary dental lab procedures.
General Duties
- Attend scheduled site meetings and training sessions.
- Be knowledgeable about programs related to the dental department, including grant scopes of work and insurances.
- Collaborate with the clinical data team to ensure accuracy and performance on clinical outcome measures.
- Work with administration to address staff and member complaints.
- Participate in accreditation processes (e.g., CODA, AAAHC).
- Coordinate and review clinical work by externs, residents, and other providers.
- Assist with preparation for state and federal audits.
- Maintain positive relations with members, guests, and staff.
- Follow safety policies to ensure safe member practices.
- Follow ergonomic safety standards and practice stretches regularly.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrate cooperative behavior with all stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Scope of Work
- See 11-14 members daily, document visits within 72 hours.
- Approve resident and extern notes within 72 hours.
- Assist other providers as needed.
- Ensure medication refills are completed before member dismissal.
- Educate team members and maintain licensure and credentials.
- Provide comprehensive care regardless of demographic factors.
- Provide care on Saturdays and after-hours as needed.
- Maintain professionalism and cultural sensitivity.
- Attain and maintain faculty positions as directed.
If assigned to a school-based clinic, duties include transporting portable equipment and setting up at offsite locations.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma from an accredited School of Dentistry and valid California dental license.
- Valid D.E.A. controlled Substance Registration Certificate.
- Current CPR certification.
- At least two years of dental care experience or residency substitution.
- Experience in four-handed dentistry.
- Ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of coordinating services with specialists.
- Experience with Electronic Dental Records preferred.
- Professional demeanor and effective communication skills.
- Fluency in Spanish highly desirable.
- Ability to meet priorities and be detail-oriented.
- Team player with a good sense of humor is a plus.
