Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The General Dentist (GD) is a key member of the dental department. The GD will perform general dentist duties and work as part of a team to provide high-quality dental care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All duties should be performed with excellence, high integrity, and in accordance with the Dental Practice Act of California.

Clinical Responsibilities

  1. Provide high-quality dental services to NAHC’s beneficiary population, including preventive health screenings and oral health education.
  2. Adhere to the dental visit model of NAHC; proactively teach Dental Assistants, see members on time, and communicate barriers to supervisors.
  3. Provide complete dental examinations and treatment planning.
  4. Read and interpret dental radiographs to ensure member understanding.
  5. Read and interpret dental lab results (e.g., biopsy) within 24 hours and communicate findings to members as necessary.
  6. Provide dental prophylactic treatment and topical fluoride treatment.
  7. Accurately diagnose and thoroughly treat dental illnesses, diseases, and disorders.
  8. Perform extractions, surgical procedures, endodontics, prosthetics, periodontics, and restorative services within your scope of experience.
  9. Refer members for specialized dental care as needed.
  10. Instruct members on post-dental treatment care, diet, medication, and oral hygiene.
  11. Address patients’ questions and perform procedures considering their comfort levels.
  12. Obtain member’s final impressions.
  13. Record basic medical and dental histories and update patient registration information.
  14. Perform necessary dental lab procedures.

General Duties

  1. Attend scheduled site meetings and training sessions.
  2. Be knowledgeable about programs related to the dental department, including grant scopes of work and insurances.
  3. Collaborate with the clinical data team to ensure accuracy and performance on clinical outcome measures.
  4. Work with administration to address staff and member complaints.
  5. Participate in accreditation processes (e.g., CODA, AAAHC).
  6. Coordinate and review clinical work by externs, residents, and other providers.
  7. Assist with preparation for state and federal audits.
  8. Maintain positive relations with members, guests, and staff.
  9. Follow safety policies to ensure safe member practices.
  10. Follow ergonomic safety standards and practice stretches regularly.
  11. Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  12. Work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  13. Demonstrate cooperative behavior with all stakeholders.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Scope of Work

  1. See 11-14 members daily, document visits within 72 hours.
  2. Approve resident and extern notes within 72 hours.
  3. Assist other providers as needed.
  4. Ensure medication refills are completed before member dismissal.
  5. Educate team members and maintain licensure and credentials.
  6. Provide comprehensive care regardless of demographic factors.
  7. Provide care on Saturdays and after-hours as needed.
  8. Maintain professionalism and cultural sensitivity.
  9. Attain and maintain faculty positions as directed.

If assigned to a school-based clinic, duties include transporting portable equipment and setting up at offsite locations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Diploma from an accredited School of Dentistry and valid California dental license.
  2. Valid D.E.A. controlled Substance Registration Certificate.
  3. Current CPR certification.
  4. At least two years of dental care experience or residency substitution.
  5. Experience in four-handed dentistry.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Knowledge of coordinating services with specialists.
  8. Experience with Electronic Dental Records preferred.
  9. Professional demeanor and effective communication skills.
  10. Fluency in Spanish highly desirable.
  11. Ability to meet priorities and be detail-oriented.
  12. Team player with a good sense of humor is a plus.

NAHC is a National Health Service Corp (NHSC) approved site and Indian Health Program site for IHS Loan Repayment.
