Job summary

Jostin Construction is seeking a General Construction Estimator in Cincinnati, full-time/salaried, reporting to the Vice President of Estimating. You will read plans, assemble cost data, and develop competitive bids across civil/site and building trades.

You will identify and prequalify subcontractors, solicit bids, and analyze factors such as materials, labor, equipment, and transportation to produce accurate estimates. Travel to jobsites may be required.

Summary of Opportunity

Win bids. Assist the VP of Estimating, and spearhead the development of accurate, timely and detailed job cost estimates. Responsible for forecasting project cost, gathering details, and compiling data to estimate all production cost according to proposal requirements. A successful candidate strongly considers raw materials, labor, equipment, tools, and transportation for estimation.

Helps determine necessary resources for projects based on cost estimates and budgetary constraints. The GC Estimator will collaborate broadly across the Jostin organization, externally with an array of vendors, subcontractors, and business partners. This position reports to the Vice President of Estimating.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Accurately analyze, assess, and read blueprints, technical construction, and architectural documents in order to prepare estimates.
• Identify qualified subcontractors and suppliers for bidding opportunities.
• Invite and obtain bids from subcontractors and suppliers.
• Identify and quantify bid and project cost factors such as production time, materials, and labor expenses.
• Analyze alternative solutions and construction methods to increase competitiveness.
• Perform research for means and methods, materials, costs and construction techniques and services to increase competitiveness.
• Develop accurate, timely and detailed job cost estimates.
• Evaluate each estimate with Chief Estimator, project managers, and/or superintendents to determine estimate accuracy, operational efficiency, and job profitability.
• Attend bid openings and collaborate with external partners.
• Recommend ways to improve the estimating process.
• Conduct value engineering.
• Analyze and evaluate bidding risks and strategies.
• Aid in negotiating contracts, change orders, etc. as required.
• Travel to jobsites to gather information on materials needed, labor required, and other factors.

Experience Required:

• Demonstrate organizational skills, including planning, problem recognition and resolution skills, scheduling work and follow-thru.
• Demonstrate a work history of partnering and collaborating with all levels of an organization (internal/external) and with diverse teams of individuals.
• Demonstrate public speaking/presentation ability.
• Ability to create and maintain processes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Solid understanding of civil/site construction, foundation and structural systems, exterior building wall systems, interior finish construction systems, mechanical and electrical systems, and associated cost.
• Knowledge of applicable building codes. Familiar with OSHA and safe work practices for the construction industry.
• Ability to work on multiple estimates simultaneously.
• The ability to work independently and as a member of a bid and project team.

Qualifications & Other Requirements

• 5 year’s general contracting estimating experience. GC Superintendent experience a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or construction management a plus.
• Expertise in reading construction drawings and specifications.
• Conceptual ability to work with minimum information and quickly develop an understanding of owner/architects’ requirements.
• Knowledge of estimating documents and the ability to provide accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the documents.
• Advanced Excel and spreadsheet knowledge and use.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Some travel may be required.
