Job summary

Cook County Health is seeking a General Anesthesiologist to deliver comprehensive anesthesia care across John H. Stroger, Provident Hospital, and affiliated clinics.

You will supervise residents and CRNAs while contributing to patient care, education, and quality assurance projects within the anesthesiology service. Your responsibilities include perioperative assessment, intraoperative management, and post-anesthesia care, with on-site call coverage as needed.

Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical college; required and must be proven at interview.
• Illinois physician license or ability to obtain license before starting.
• Completed Anesthesiology Residency; proof required at interview.
• Board certified or board eligible in Anesthesiology by ABA; proof required.
• Active Illinois Controlled Substance License required or ability to obtain.
• Active DEA license required or ability to obtain.
• ACLS certification from the American Heart Association; proof required.

Responsibilities

• Provide anesthetic care across hospital settings meeting compliance standards.
• Perform preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthesia, and post-anesthesia care.
• Supervise residents and provide medical direction to CRNAs.
• Deliver anesthesia in OR, obstetrics, PACU, ICU, and other areas as needed.
• Coordinate with nurses, residents, CRNAs, and surgeons during procedures.
• Manage airway and life support; prepare patients for emergency surgery.
• Assess recovery status and determine transfer or discharge readiness.

LOCATION: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital

DEPARTMENT: Anesthesiology & Pain Management

Job Summary

The General Anesthesiologist will be responsible for patient care, resident training, daily administrative duties, and conducting quality assurance projects per the needs of the Anesthesiology Service throughout CCH covering services as John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Provident Hospital, and clinics/procedure areas where anesthesiology services are provided. The scope of these activities cover hospitalized patients and all phases of ambulatory care. The majority of the Anesthesiologist's time will be devoted to patient care. Administrative duties and quality assurance activities will be offered based on the needs of the department.

TYPICAL DUTIES

• Provides anesthetic care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards
• Provides complete range of anesthetic care to patients including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post anesthesia care in compliance with the national Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards
• Works independently, supervises residents, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist's (CRNA)
• Provides anesthesia related care in all dedicated areas of the Operating Rooms (OR), Obstetrics, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Intensive Care Units and other clinical settings
• Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic test to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures
• Coordinates and directs work during medical procedures with nurses, residents, CRNA's, medical technicians, and health care providers
• Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and Monitor Anesthesia Care (MAC) types of anesthesia
• Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures in the operation room
• Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed, and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery
• Determines when patients have recovered, or stabilized enough, to be transferred to Intensive Care Unit, or discharged home following surgery
• Works daily hours, take 1st call (in-house), as well as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other calls based on OR needs
• Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university is required. (MUST PROVIDE PROOF AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)
• Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment is required.
• Successfully completed Anesthesiology Residency training is required. (MUST PROVIDE PROOF AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)
• Board certified or Board eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiologist (ABA) is required. (MUST PROVIDE PROOF AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)
• Active Illinois Controlled Substance License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment is required.
• Active Drug Enforcement Agency License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment is required.
• Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required. (MUST PROVIDE PROOF AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience in an academic program is preferred.

• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients
• Strong working knowledge base in anesthesiology and pain management; participates in the development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies, and standards essential to the delivery of quality anesthetic care
• Proficiency in the safe administration of blood and blood products ensuring that all protocol is followed
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills -the ability to establish rapport with families

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
