Job Summary

Location: STROGER & PROVIDENT (FLOATS) TRAUMA ANESTHESIA

Shift: 6:30 AM – 4:30 PM Rotating

Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for the administration of all anesthetic agents and adjuvants to patients across Cook County Health (CCH) undergoing surgical, obstetrical, and other diagnostic procedures; administers oxygen and other anesthetic gases, intravenous anesthetics, analgesics, regional anesthesia, intravenous solutions, blood and blood products.
• Responsible for the management of airway and support of vital functions, including induction, intubation, and maintenance of anesthesia.
• Supports patient ventilation, whether manually or through mechanical ventilator, and monitors physiological responses of the patient to anesthesia and surgery through ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography, measurement of blood gases and electrolytes when appropriate.
• Continuously monitors and interprets patient vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and volume, including invasive monitoring) and bodily functions (temperature, urinary output, etc.) during anesthesia and surgery.
• Maintains an accurate record of all anesthetics, medications, and fluids used during anesthesia.
• Provides professional observation and support of care until the patient has regained control of vital functions.
• Recognizes undesirable responses and takes appropriate corrective action, including requesting consultation by an anesthesiologist when the patient exhibits abnormal responses to anesthesia, medications, or the surgical procedure.
• Attends clinical conferences held by the Department of Anesthesiology, including weekly Morbidity & Mortality Conference and Anesthesiology Grand Rounds.
• Attends anesthesia meetings sponsored by the local, state, and national American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Association and the meetings of local, state and national societies of anesthesiologists when desirable or permissible.
• Participates in required educational programs for hospital fire, safety and other required programs.
• Attends departmental scheduled staff meetings.
• Keeps abreast of and increases knowledge of current anesthesia trends and practice.
• Participates in departmental Quality Assurance (QA) projects, morbidity & mortality reports, conferences, and presentations.
• Participates in instruction, supervision, evaluation, and professional guidance for rotating student nurse anesthetist from Rush University Nurse Anesthesia program.
• Anticipates completion of successful anesthesia clinical rotations, with increasing levels during student nurse anesthesia education (Letter from Program Director/Designee indicating such).
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois.
• Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
• Master’s Degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program OR eligibility to complete Master’s Degree at an accredited nurse anesthesia program two weeks prior to starting employment (must provide original copy of college or university transcript OR a letter from program director or designee stating eligibility status to graduate at the time of interview). Current State of Illinois Advanced Practice License and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia certificate are required by the first day of employment.
• Current State of Illinois Advanced Practice License and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia certificate is required OR the ability to obtain State of Illinois Advanced Practice License and CRNA certification two weeks prior to starting employment.
• Must possess progressive experience and advanced knowledge in a specialized area of clinical nursing.
• Must possess an active CPR card or have the ability to obtain one within two (2) weeks of starting (must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained).
• Must possess an active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or have the ability to obtain one within two (2) weeks of starting (must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained).
• Must possess an active Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or have the ability to obtain one within two (2) weeks of starting (must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained).

Preferred Qualifications

Current experience and applied knowledge of all anesthetic agents and adjuvants, all anesthesia machines, instruments and monitoring equipment used in the administration of anesthesia, as well as practical experience in providing all types of anesthesia.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

• Knowledge to provide anesthesia services, including but not limited to monitored anesthesia care, regional, and general anesthesia.
• Knowledge of anesthesia and related pharmacology agents to provide anesthesia services including but not limited to general, local, monitored anesthesia care and regional anesthesia.
• Ability to work any shift.
