Job summary

C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking a Gas Distribution Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team in a hands-on role on underground utility projects.

You will operate excavators, skid steers, and loaders, while maintaining safe work practices around utilities and adhering to job specifications. The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of heavy equipment experience, familiarity with gas distribution or underground utilities, and the ability to pass Operator Qualifications.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment.
• Experience in gas distribution or underground utility construction preferred.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must pass and maintain required Operator Qualifications (OQs).

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently (excavators, skid steers, loaders).
• Excavate around buried utilities while following locator markings.
• Perform trenching, pipe installation, backfilling, and site prep.
• Maintain trench depth, grade, and alignment per specs.
• Assist with pipe handling and alignment during installation.
• Follow safety policies and DOT/OSHA regulations.
• Perform equipment inspections and report issues.
• Coordinate with crew and communicate progress and hazards.
