Job summary

Xcel Energy is offering a summer internship with the Gas Distribution Operations team, inviting students to impact safety, efficiency and customer service. You’ll work alongside field and office staff, gaining hands-on exposure to distribution systems and data-driven projects.

The program begins May 31, 2027 and may extend. Expect to develop dashboards using Excel/Power BI and to participate in field visits, reporting, and process improvements in a hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

  • Current student, Junior or higher as of Fall 2027.
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Data Analytics, or related field.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) or part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commute to the designated work location in-person per hybrid policy.
  • Preferred: Excel, Power BI and data analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze operational data and performance metrics to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Support gas distribution projects related to system reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop reports, dashboards, and presentations for leadership and operational teams.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Dispatch, and Safety teams on process improvement initiatives.

The intern will support Gas Distribution Operations by working alongside field and office personnel to improve safety, operational efficiency, compliance, and customer service. The intern will gain exposure to gas distribution systems, construction activities, maintenance programs, emergency response procedures, and data analysis while contributing to projects that support business objectives.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Analyze operational data and performance metrics to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Support gas distribution projects related to system reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with tracking construction, maintenance, and emergency response activities.
  • Participate in field visits to observe gas distribution operations and understand work practices.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Dispatch, and Safety teams on process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop reports, dashboards, and presentations for leadership and operational teams.
  • Review standard operating procedures and recommend process efficiencies.
  • Support asset management and data quality improvement efforts within company systems.

This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Junior or higher (as of Fall 2027)
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and other data analysis tools preferred.
  • Interest in utility operations, energy infrastructure, and continuous improvement.

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $19.20 to $21.00 per hour
