Job summary

Xcel Energy is seeking a paid internship to support the Distribution Gas Design Organization in the East Twin Cities service territory. The role offers hands-on experience in planning, design, and execution of natural gas distribution projects, working with designers, engineers, operations personnel, and external customers.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in ABET-accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Construction Management, Project Management (construction-focused), Surveying Engineering or Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Utility Engineering, Industrial Engineering.

Responsibilities

• Review city/county/state construction plans for conflicts.
• Design gas and service replacements.
• Set up billing for customer driven jobs.
• Review as-builts and mapping for inaccuracies.
• Submit requests to fix mapping inaccuracies.

Xcel Energy is seeking a candidate to support our Distribution Gas Design Organization within our East Twin Cities service territory. This paid internship offers students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the planning, design, and execution of natural gas distribution projects. Interns will assist with project design activities, field investigations, construction coordination, and stakeholder communication while working closely with designers, engineers, operations personnel, and external customers. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to utility operations, interns will develop technical and professional skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and gain a deeper understanding of how natural gas infrastructure is designed, maintained, and improved to safely serve our customers and communities.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• Review city/county/state construction plans for conflicts
• Design gas and service replacements
• Set up billing for customer driven jobs
• Review as-builts and mapping for inaccuracies
• Submit requests to fix mapping inaccuracies

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements

• Current student, Sophomore or higher
• Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Construction Management, Project Management (construction-focused), Surveying Engineering or Land Surveying , Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Utility Engineering , Industrial Engineering
• Potential day travel to work sites, as required
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy

Preferred Qualifications

• 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
• Experience or Proficiency with GIS tools
• Able to commute to the Newport (MN) Service Center

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $18.90 to $19.50 per hour
