VW International seeks a Gardener to perform landscaping and grounds maintenance for the US Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) at the Birmingham Southern campus, 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254. The role requires operating mowers, trimmers, and related equipment and passing background checks.

The position involves planting, turf care, seasonal landscaping projects, and reporting maintenance needs to supervisors.

Qualifications

• 1–2 years of landscaping or grounds maintenance experience in commercial or military environments.
• Knowledge of lawn care, plant cultivation, fertilization, and landscape maintenance techniques.
• Experience operating landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
• Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to pass background check, drug screening, and site security requirements.

What You'll Do

The Gardener performs landscaping and grounds maintenance services for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Training Center (TRACEN) Birmingham Southern campus located at 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254.

• Plan and execute small-scale landscaping and grounds maintenance operations.
• Prepare and grade terrain for landscaping projects.
• Apply fertilizers, seed lawns, lay sod, and maintain healthy turf areas.
• Transplant, cultivate, and maintain shrubs, trees, flowers, and other plants.
• Plant new lawns and repair established lawns using appropriate seed mixtures and fertilizers based on soil conditions and site requirements.
• Install and maintain landscape features to achieve desired aesthetic and functional outcomes.
• Mow, edge, and trim lawns using hand-operated and power equipment.
• Trim shrubs, cultivate garden beds, and remove weeds as needed.
• Spray trees and shrubs and apply supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to maintain plant health.
• Clean and maintain grounds using rakes, brooms, hoses, and other landscaping tools.
• Dig trenches and install drainage systems, including drain tile where required.
• Perform minor repairs to concrete and asphalt walkways and driveways.
• Safely operate and maintain gardening implements, hand tools, and power-operated landscaping equipment.
• Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and maintenance issues to the appropriate supervisor.
• Adhere to all safety procedures and environmental regulations while performing duties.

What You’ll Have

• Minimum 1-2 years of landscaping, grounds maintenance, or gardening experience in commercial, municipal, military, or federal environments.
• Knowledge of lawn care, plant cultivation, fertilization practices, and landscape maintenance techniques.
• Experience operating landscaping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other power-operated tools.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and comply with site security requirements.
• Valid driver's license preferred.
• Have or obtain any required site-specific certifications, training, or immunizations.
