IMPORTANT:

Candidates must have a Commercial Pesticide Applicator - Category 3A License issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Position Overview:

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) manages water supply, wastewater, stormwater, and pollution reduction for NYC. The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis (BEPA) oversees Green Infrastructure design, construction, and maintenance. The Green Infrastructure Maintenance Unit seeks an experienced Gardener 2 to supervise maintenance of rain gardens, stormwater greenstreets, and landscaped areas.

Responsibilities:

1. Supervise subordinate Gardeners and City Park Workers in daily maintenance tasks such as litter removal, sediment removal, leaf raking, soil replenishment, regrading, edging, planting, weeding, watering, pruning, pest management, and snow management.
2. Approve timesheets, schedule work, maintain evaluation logs, and collect work logs.
3. Coordinate with administrative personnel for ordering tools, plants, and materials.
4. Coordinate with other agencies for vehicle maintenance, safety training, and interagency projects.
5. Perform labor in various weather conditions, involving physical tasks like bending, pulling, pushing, and standing for long periods.
6. Utilize basic computing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office and digital cameras.
7. Wear PPE such as masks, safety glasses, and protective gear.

Minimum Qualifications:

• One year of full-time gardening experience or a horticulture/botanic program certificate, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Additional one year of gardening experience for Level II appointment, including propagating, planting, and caring for plants.
• Must hold a Commercial Pesticide Applicator - Category 3A License, maintained throughout employment.
• Valid NY State driver license, maintained during employment.

Preferred Skills:

• Commercial Pesticide Applicator - Category 3A License.
• Excellent communication skills and supervisory experience.

Additional Information:
