Job summary

University of California, Berkeley is seeking a part-time Horticulturist (43% FTE) to maintain garden areas, curate the Blake Garden collection, and support landscape architecture education. The role includes volunteer supervision, field tours, and collaboration with campus departments.

The position emphasizes independent work, strong knowledge of California flora, and the ability to manage records and educational materials. Weekend events may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or equivalent experience.
• Experience in arboreta, horticulture and garden design.
• Working knowledge of basic landscape maintenance including irrigation systems operations, troubleshooting, and repair.
• Ability to work independently, set and meet objectives, and coordinate objectives with other staff.
• Familiarity with California flora and ability to provide plant and pest identification.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and research collection acquisitions.
• Strong verbal and written communication in English, with time management and multi-tasking skills.
• Ability to work with diverse staff, volunteers, and the public.
• Capacity to lift up to 100 lbs on occasion.

Responsibilities

• 60% Horticultural Maintenance: watering, fertilizing, mulching, soil amendments, weeding, pruning, and supervising volunteers; manage paths, drainage, and display improvements.
• 20% Curation: maintain plant records, conservation, plant acquisitions, propagation requests, and label upkeep.
• 10% Education: support Curriculum, student training, tours, and produce interpretive materials.
• 10% Miscellaneous Duties: assist with projects, outreach, and weekend events.
