Residential Helper / Back of Garbage Truck for our Stamford, CT location.
Summary of Position:
The Helper is responsible for assisting the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, or recycling.
- Full-time Monday through Friday early morning shift from 4AM to 2:30PM.
- Some Saturdays required. $17.50 per hour.
- Time and a half after 40 hours.
This job is an OSHA "Safety Sensitive" position. You must be able to pass a background check and full drug screening, including marijuana/THC.
Essential Job Functions
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
- Picks up solid waste and places it in the back of a rear load garbage truck on specified routes, often done manually or by pushing a totter to the tipper. Lifts and carries trash bags, bulk items, and containers to the truck for disposal. Climbs onto and off of the rear truck step to load refuse, waste, and carts. Operates packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck.
- Provides a safe and distinguishably different level of service through courteous and expeditious customer service in all aspects of refuse operation to the general public and customers. Exhibits a positive attitude towards company, customer, and municipal goals.
- Ensures garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly; pick up may require using back door.
- Answers questions for residents and directs them to contact Customer Service or appropriate government office for additional information.
- Must comply with all ANSI, OSHA, and company safety policies, including Oak Ridge Waste Absolute Guidelines.
- Assists driver in safely backing up the truck by directing from the ground.
- Cleans behind the compactor blade with shovel and hoe when directed. Sprays and cleans the hopper and truck at the end of each shift or as needed.
- Reports any safety or customer service issues to the driver and supervisor immediately.
- Performs manual duties in clean-up of scattered refuse; cleans up around accidental waste spills and ensures containers are replaced properly.
- May be required to work during emergency situations.
- Assists other routes as needed to complete daily work.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Other Job Responsibilities:
- Attend and participate in corporation-sponsored training courses as assigned.
- Stay updated on current technology used by Oak Ridge Waste.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.

Physical Work Requirements:
- Physically able to push or pull 50 pounds unassisted, 800-1000 times a day.
- Physically able to lift 50 pounds unassisted, 800-1000 times a day.
- Physically able to get in and out of the truck cab 800-1000 times a day.
- Physically able to bend at waist and knees 800-1000 times a day.
- Able to work 8-12 hours in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to ride on outside of truck while servicing residential customers in low MPH areas.
