Job summary

The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a confident Garage Operations Assistant to lead a maintenance crew and prioritize critical tasks for safe roadways. You will work with highway maintenance staff, coordinate operations with the supervisor, and ensure records and inventories are accurate.

Benefits include health/dental, retirement, vacation, and 9 holidays. A CDL permit is required upon hire, with endorsements obtained within 5 months. On-site residency and on-call shifts apply.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required or equivalent.
• Experience coordinating maintenance operations is preferred.
• Ability to work with highway maintenance staff and supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and communicate daily maintenance operations with the Highway Maintenance Supervisor.
• Handle routine administrative tasks using common technology.
• Prepare project plans aligned with budget and operations needs.
• Review maintenance records, inventories, and crew reports for accuracy.
• Oversee traffic control setups for safe roadway maintenance.
• Coordinate snow operations and remove snow with equipment.
• Assist with grading and paving projects.
