Job summary

The International African American Museum in Charleston is seeking professional, service-minded Gallery Security Specialists to join our team as unarmed security officers. Available positions include first-shift and second-shift opportunities with both full-time and part-time schedules.

You will help ensure IAAM remains a safe, welcoming environment while protecting galleries, visitors, staff, and the historic site. Starting pay is $17.00 per hour with free parking and other benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Ability to work overtime when needed for full-time positions.
• CPR, AED, and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification upon hire
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to navigate stairs and conduct outdoor patrols.
• Ability to remain calm, effective, and professional under pressure.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• A welcoming, respectful, and service-oriented approach to working with the public.

Responsibilities

• Protect our galleries and collections by monitoring assigned posts throughout galleries, lobbies, entrances, exterior grounds, maritime-adjacent areas, and parking facilities.
• Welcome and assist visitors with a friendly, professional presence and provide directions and information as needed.
• Maintain a safe visitor experience by monitoring traffic and supporting orderly movement throughout gallery spaces.
• Respond to emergencies including medical incidents, disturbances, alarms, severe weather, fire, evacuations, and other emergency situations.
• Support emergency preparedness and assist first responders when needed.
• Observe and report suspicious activity, hazards, incidents, and policy violations.

As a Gallery Security Specialist, you’ll play an essential role in protecting our galleries, treasured artwork, visitors, staff, and historic site while helping create a welcoming, safe, and dignified experience for every guest.

What You'll Do

As a Gallery Security Specialist, you will help ensure that IAAM remains a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment for everyone.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Protect our galleries and collections by monitoring assigned posts throughout galleries, lobbies, entrances, exterior grounds, maritime-adjacent areas, and parking facilities.
• Welcome and assist visitors with a friendly, professional presence and provide directions and information as needed.
• Maintain a safe visitor experience by monitoring traffic and supporting orderly movement throughout gallery spaces.
• Respond to emergencies including medical incidents, disturbances, alarms, severe weather, fire, evacuations, and other emergency situations.

• Assist with crowd management during high-attendance days, programs, and special events.
