Job summary

Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University seeks a Gallery Guide to lead engaging tours for K-12 groups, adults, and the public. You will foster thoughtful conversations about art using Visual Thinking Strategies and inquiry-based learning, creating welcoming experiences that invite participation and exploration.

You will train with the education team, keep safety at the forefront, and represent Duke with professionalism, contributing to an inclusive, dynamic learning environment for visitors.

Qualifications

• Six months of experience in a position involving public contact to interact with tour audiences.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences.
• Ability to engage audiences and adapt communication to meet learning needs.
• Interest in visual arts, museums, education, or public engagement.
• Ability to learn new information quickly and present it effectively.
• Strong collaboration skills and a customer-focused mindset.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule averaging 2-10 hours per week.
• Daily access to email for scheduling and communications.
• Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 90 minutes) and assist with moving tour materials.

Responsibilities

• Lead engaging tours of the Nasher Museum of Art and special exhibitions for K-12 groups, adult visitors, and public audiences.
• Facilitate meaningful conversations about art using Visual Thinking Strategies, inquiry-based learning techniques, and open-ended questioning.
• Create welcoming and inclusive experiences that encourage participation and exploration.
• Manage groups of up to 15 visitors while maintaining safety and adhering to museum policies.
• Help protect visitors, artwork, and spaces through effective group management and safety awareness.
• Continuously expand knowledge of artists, exhibitions, and artworks to engage diverse audiences.
• Participate in training sessions and professional development offered by the education team.
• Review exhibition materials and interpretive content to prepare for tours.
• Represent the Nasher Museum and Duke University with professionalism and enthusiasm.
