Position Summary

Gallery Attendants serve as the first point of contact for visitors, providing a welcoming presence at the front desk of one of the Trust’s visual arts galleries. In this key role, attendants help foster a positive, safe, and engaging environment by monitoring artwork and exhibitions, assisting with visitor inquiries, and supporting the overall visitor experience.

Position Summary

Gallery Attendants serve as the first point of contact for visitors, providing a welcoming presence at the front desk of one of the Trust’s visual arts galleries. In this key role, attendants help foster a positive, safe, and engaging environment by monitoring artwork and exhibitions, assisting with visitor inquiries, and supporting the overall visitor experience.

Shifts are Wednesday through Sunday, from 10:45 AM – 5:00 PM (6.25 hours/day), including a paid 30-minute lunch break from 1:00 – 1:30 PM. Occasional evening shifts may be required in support of public programming and special events. Shift assignments are based on the curatorial schedule for each gallery and may vary accordingly. Priority will be given to candidates who are available for all five days.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art history, art education, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will also be considered.

Work Experience: 2–5 years’ experience preferred, working in galleries, museums, or other visitor-centered environments, with an emphasis on customer service and visitor engagement.

Supervisory Experience: None required

Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, scheduling software, and basic audio-visual equipment is highly desirable.

Intangibles: Strong customer service orientation with excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain composed and flexible in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Passion for art, and demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and empathy when working with a diverse range of visitors and colleagues.

Essential Functions

  • Greet and assist visitors, providing accurate and engaging information about current exhibitions
  • Monitor the safety and security of artwork and gallery spaces
  • Serve as an informed and approachable presence to uphold a positive visitor experience
  • Communicate and enforce gallery policies with tact and professionalism
  • Support gallery operations as needed, including opening/closing procedures and assisting during events

Supervisory responsibility: This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Decision-making responsibility: This position has day-to-day decision-making responsibility around visitor issues.

Budgetary responsibility: This position does not have budgetary responsibility.

Strategic responsibility: This position does not have strategic responsibility.

Reporting requirements: This position provides/assists with reports on gallery visits and guest activities.

Travel requirements: None required for this position.

Physical demands: This position involves office work – occasional lifting up to 20-30 lbs. may be required. The individual should be able to sit and/or view a computer screen for long periods.

Compensation:

This is a part-time, hourly position. Compensation starts at $15/hour.
