G5 Trail Collective- Disaster Information Specialist

Overview

The G5 Trail Collective is looking for a candidate to provide information to the public on disaster recovery efforts and general information for trails, roads, and recreation sites in the Pisgah National Forest’s Grandfather Ranger District. The candidate will provide information by phone at the Grandfather District Office, and in person at recreation sites around the forest. The candidate will also create information products and maintain signs and information boards at trailheads. The candidate must be a skilled communicator and have experience in use or management of public lands. While this is primarily an office position, the candidate will also be required to drive to perform some field-based assessments. The candidate will be part of the recreation and trail crew. The candidate will be an employee of Camp Grier, working for the G5 Trail Collective Program in Nebo, NC.

Requirements

• the candidate must:
• have excellent communication skills with the public, staff and coworkers
• have an overall understanding and direction of the health of the National Forest for its recreational needs and uses.
• have knowledge, experience, and skill in public-facing roles (minimum of 1+ years), including but not limited to outdoor education, outfitter and guide roles, science education, outdoor retail operations, forest and park interpretation, or trail/recreation management.
• show the utmost ability to work independently and with other crew members in both office and field settings in the National Forest, follow clear safety protocols, have a sense of accomplishment and pride in providing customer service to the public.
• have proficiency in computer operations and document editing software.
• have experience operating basic carpentry tools for minor repairs.
• have a valid driver’s license

Preferred Additional Knowledge & Skills

• Experience graphic design, photography, photo editing, or other visual media
• Experience in social media content creation and/or marketing
• Experience in GPS or GIS based software for data collection and/or map making
• WFA or WFR or similar 1st aid
• Chainsaw certification (bucking/limbing/felling) or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
• Carpentry- framing, roofing, foundation, rigging, etc., or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
• B.S. in Natural Resources, Biology, Soil Sciences, Geology, Hydrology, Psychology, Outdoor Recreation, Public Affairs, Graphic Design or a combination of related fields of study, or the ability to get certified in those modalities.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Be able to successfully take direction and understand the information needs and sensitivities in communication of Helene Recovery Priorities.
• Be able to work in a harmonious fashion with co workers and superintendent.
• Assess and prescribe solutions to information needs.
• Work with the G5 Special Projects Manager and Volunteer Coordinator to ensure continuity of information.
• Answer phones to provide information on conditions of sites around the forest.
• Coordinate with USFS and partner organizations to ensure common picture of information needs.
• Create and maintain information such as maps and guides with up-do-date post-Helene information for distribution and posting.
• Maintain and update trailhead kiosks throughout the Grandfather Districts. Build, paint, and maintain signs for installation on the forest.
• Support G5 events as needed.

Physical Demands

Work will be primarily in an office setting with occasional field work. Office work will require sitting or standing throughout the day. Field work will occasionally require walking multiple miles over rough and uneven terrain. The candidate may lift, push, pull and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

This is primarily an office job, with greater than 80% spent in the office and less than 20% in the field. The employee will have office space at the Grandfather Ranger District in Nebo as well as at Camp Grier, but may drive to work at sites across McDowell, Burke, Caldwell, and Avery Counties. Most of the work will be performed in a climate-controlled office, with potentially longer sedentary periods. Field work will be performed in a mountainous, forested environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, wet, and covered with thick and tangled vegetation. Work can occur in inclement weather (rain, snow, freezing temperatures or temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and under dusty conditions. Work occasionally requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, and hardhats.

Compensation

$49,000 a year

Retirement- Camp Grier will match, up to 3%, of an employee contribution to the Camp

Time off- Camp Grier will provide three weeks of paid time off to be used at the employee's discretion.
