Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or service models must complete specific MCPS-provided courses, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, to support behavioral interventions.
Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited institution. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment is required. Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of relevant teaching experience. Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Must meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
