Official Job Description
Summary:

Under the supervision of the school principal and special education supervisor, the teacher provides direct instruction and support to students with disabilities, collaborates with general education teachers, monitors student outcomes, and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Physical Demands:

As required by job duties.

Special Requirements:

Attendance at school meetings and activities outside instructional hours is required. Teachers in special education settings must complete specific MCPS courses, including behavioral management and crisis intervention, and support behavioral interventions as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, IEPs, learning theories, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, and relevant policies (ESSA, IDEA).
  • Ability to support instruction, adapt programs and materials, and work effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Excellent communication skills and understanding of MCPS Teacher Professional Growth Standards.
Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited institution.
  • Fluency in learning theories, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching or two years of relevant teaching experience.
Certifications:

Meets Maryland State Department of Education standards for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is preferred.
