POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY


School nurses will be employed to provide basic health care services to district students during the school day thereby minimizing student absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS


The nurses shall have licensure as a registered professional nurse and be certified in CPR as a minimum.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Maintain confidentiality about students’ health, illness, or accident.

  • Maintain cumulative health records including state immunization status for each student.

  • Review each student’s immunization status.

  • Send immunization requirement form, if appropriate

  • Obtain medical/religious/immunization-in-process form, if appropriate.

  • Work with the coordinator of nursing services in securing supplies and equipment for the building

  • clinics.

  • Maintain clinics with supplies, first aid materials, equipment, and necessary resource material.

  • Notification of student health conditions to appropriate building staff.

  • Conduct student wellness checks as needed during/after times of dysregulation.

  • Check the vision and hearing of students when referred for screening and as noted below.

  • Yearly vision screenings are to be done in grades K, 1, 3, 5.

  • Hearing screenings in grades K, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8.

  • Vision and hearing will be completed on all new students.

  • Inform parents and teachers of probable health problems.

  • Weigh students in grades K and 6.

  • Participate in and pass CPR certification annually through renewal or refresher courses.

  • Perform special care procedures (i.e., catheterization).

  • Provide first aid to ill or injured and complete accident/injury reports as necessary.

  • Assist with students needing medication and keep an accurate record of that information.

  • Keep a daily log of all student clinic visits.


ADDITIONAL DUTIES



  • Serve as a resource person regarding individual student matters and curriculum support for building personnel.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal and/or Assistant Superintendent of Special Services.

  • Possess the ability to effectively communicate, verbally, and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.


MENTAL DEMANDS


Ability to maintain highly confidential information; communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and/or ability to reason and make appropriate decisions. The nurse will also need to keep impeccable records and be detail-oriented. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS


An individual who holds this position must have the ability to concentrate in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously.


This employee will frequently lift over 20 lbs and occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 lbs. The employee will reach, stand, walk, grasp, and use repetitive movements in this role.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


Employment will be on an at‑will basis for 9 1⁄2 months, beginning with the first day of the work calendar or at the time of employment for the duration of the school year with prorated personal leave. Each nurse will be provided a work calendar showing the specific daily work schedules of the employee. The work calendar may be modified by the Board of Education at any time, as needs dictate.


Seven and 1⁄2 hours for elementary and middle schools and eight hours for high school (including a paid 30‑minute lunch period) will constitute a workday for school nurses. A definite daily schedule will be established by the building principal and approved by the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel.


The yearly salary will be disbursed in twenty‑four (24) equal payments.


EVALUATION


End‑of‑the‑year performance evaluations will occur annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional support staff personnel.
