Job summary

The Fairbanks North Star Borough is seeking a capable accountant to perform technical accounting tasks, maintain general ledger balances, budgets and encumbrances, and respond to inquiries across departments. The role supports accurate financial reporting and year-end processes.

The position requires a Bachelor's in accounting, several years of accounting experience, strong Excel skills, and experience with automated accounting systems. A valid driver's license is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited institution (finance or related degree with Intermediate Accounting coursework).
• Three years of progressively responsible accounting experience (or two years public accounting); other relevant experience may substitute.
• Experience with a sophisticated financial management system and general ledger; ability to analyze inter-relationships of data.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; Word, Access, PowerPoint; Acrobat preferred.
• Experience with enterprise-wide automated accounting systems and automated general ledger.
• Knowledge of governmental or fund accounting preferred.
• Supervisory experience on a technical level desirable.
• Accurate keyboarding and touch-typing; 10-key calculator proficiency.
• Preferred: valid driver's license and auto insurance; driving record may be required.

Responsibilities

• Review procurements, budget transfers, and appropriating ordinances for correct account distribution.
• Maintain general ledger file maintenance for assigned funds.
• Prepare budget and journal entries for assigned funds.
• Respond to inquiries from Borough employees for assigned funds.
• Prepare reconciliations, allocations, reports, statements, and schedules; assist with special projects.
• Perform analyses of accounts in assigned funds; reconcile and distribute reports.
• Assist with year-end accounting tasks, audits, and financial statement preparation.
• Troubleshoot and test software updates; train/supervise staff on the financial management system.
• Assist with records retention program for the General Ledger section.
