Job summary

Capgemini is seeking an experienced Functional Safety (FuSa) Engineer in Auburn Hills, MI, to join a cross-functional product development team. You will apply ISO 26262 standards across multiple vehicle domains, lead FuSa tasks, and develop key safety artifacts to ensure safe and compliant vehicle features throughout the development lifecycle.

The role requires 5–8 years of automotive FuSa experience, independence in safety analyses, and collaboration with design teams.

Qualifications

  • 5–8 years of proven experience in functional safety engineering, preferably within the automotive industry.
  • Experience with Body Control Modules, Chassis, Powertrain, Interior, Connectivity or Infotainment.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of ISO 26262 standards.
  • Experience developing HARAs and Functional Safety Concepts (FSCs).
  • Ability to lead and manage functional safety activities independently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform, support, and/or manage the execution of all Functional Safety (ISO 26262) tasks for FuSa-relevant vehicle features.
  • Apply FuSa principles across Body, Chassis, E/E Platform, and ADAS domains.
  • Develop and maintain key FuSa work products: Impact Analysis, Item Definition, HARA, FSC, and Technical Safety Concept.
  • Collaborate with Design DFMEA activities and participate in design reviews.
  • Support Design Verification Plan development and lead review of FuSa work products for quality and compliance.

We are seeking an experienced Functional Safety (FuSa) Engineer to join our cross-functional product development team. The ideal candidate will be an expert in ISO 26262 standards and capable of performing FuSa analysis independently without additional training. This role is critical in ensuring that our vehicle features meet the highest safety standards through rigorous analysis, design support, and verification throughout the development lifecycle. The engineer will work across multiple vehicle domains, including Body, Chassis, E/E Platform, and ADAS.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform, support, and/or manage the execution of all Functional Safety (ISO 26262) tasks for vehicle features identified as FuSa-relevant.
  • Apply FuSa principles to a wide range of systems across key domains:
  • Body: Exterior lighting, wipers, power closures, airbag controls, seat belt pretensioners.
  • Chassis: Braking (ABS, ESC), steering (EPS), suspension control, traction control.
  • E/E Platform: Power distribution, vehicle communication networks, cybersecurity gateways.
  • Develop and maintain key FuSa work products, including:
  • Impact Analysis
  • Item Definition
  • Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA)
  • Functional Safety Concept
  • Technical Safety Concept
  • Collaborate with and support design activities Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Actively participate in design discussions to ensure safety requirements are correctly understood and are implementable.
  • Support the validation and verification team in the development of the Design Verification Plan (DVP).
  • Lead confirmation and verification reviews of all Functional Safety work products to ensure compliance and quality.
  • Serve as an integral member of a cross-functional team to support overall product development goals.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • 5-8 years of proven experience in functional safety engineering, preferably within the automotive industry.
  • Experience in any of the automotive components like Body Control Modules, Chassis or Powertrain or Interior or Connectivity or Infotainment
  • Strong understanding and practical application of ISO 26262 standards.
  • Experience in developing HARAs and Functional Safety Concepts (FSCs).
  • Ability to lead and manage functional safety activities independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in tracking and reporting safety metrics and issues.
  • Experience participating in design reviews and providing constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work effectively in both onshore and offshore team environments.

The pay range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.91/hour - $38.93/hour.
