Join Duke Neurosurgery!

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a talented Functional Neurosurgeon to join our faculty in Raleigh, NC.

As national leaders in research, patient care, and education, Duke Neurosurgery is experiencing tremendous growth and is currently seeking a candidate with great clinical acumen to provide patients with high-quality, compassionate care. This position is based predominantly at Duke Raleigh Hospital and is a 100% clinical appointment at the outset, with a scheduled review at 24 months at which protected research or administrative effort may be established.

MR-guided and low-intensity focused ultrasound procedures are performed at Duke University Hospital in Durham, and the successful candidate will practice across both sites on a schedule agreed at the time of offer. This is an opportunity to build a functional neurosurgery service in one of the fastest-growing markets in the Southeast, with the full resources of Duke Health behind it.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the growth of the Duke Center for Neurorestoration, where a Raleigh site materially expands patient access to neuromodulation for painful diabetic neuropathy, spinal cord injury, stroke recovery, and neuroimmune indications.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform complex functional neurosurgical procedures, including deep brain stimulation for movement disorders (awake, asleep, and sensing-enabled or adaptive systems), neuromodulation for chronic pain, vagus nerve stimulation (stroke/rheumatoid).
• Perform MR-guided focused ultrasound at Duke University Hospital, and participate in investigational low-intensity focused ultrasound work conducted under IDE or IRB-approved protocol.
• Deliver pain and restorative neuromodulation, including spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion and peripheral nerve stimulation, and intrathecal drug delivery.
• Provide expert evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning for patients with complex functional neurological and neurosurgical conditions.
• Build and lead the Raleigh functional neurosurgery service, including referral pathways, multidisciplinary clinic structure, and device programming capacity.
• Support enrollment into the division's neuromodulation clinical trials from the Raleigh site, with opportunity for site investigator roles.
• Contribute to the growth of the Duke Center for Neurorestoration.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Duke Health, including neurology, psychiatry, pain management, physical medicine and rehabilitation, endocrinology, and other specialties, to develop comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans.
• Mentor and educate residents, fellows, and medical students, fostering a culture of clinical excellence and continuous learning.
• Contribute to departmental leadership, program development, and strategic initiatives in alignment with institutional goals.

Required Qualifications

• MD or MD-PhD with completion of an ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency.
• Fellowship training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, or a closely related subspecialty.
• Board-certified or board-eligible in Neurosurgery, and eligible for North Carolina medical licensure.
• Demonstrated independent operative experience in deep brain stimulation.
• Willingness to practice across Duke Raleigh Hospital and Duke University Hospital on a schedule agreed at the time of offer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Independent experience with MR-guided focused ultrasound. Candidates without independent experience will be considered, with proctored training funded and scheduled as a term of the offer.
• Substantive experience in pain neuromodulation, including spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery.
• Demonstrated success building a referral base or establishing a new clinical service.
• Prior experience practicing across more than one hospital.
• Clinical trial enrollment experience.
• Proven experience in teaching and mentoring within academic or hospital-based programs.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Effort and Practice Development

• At appointment: 100% clinical effort, with a defined case allocation during the first year while the referral base is established.
• At 24 months: A scheduled review with the Chair and division chief to determine whether protected research or administrative effort can be supported.
• Support provided: Advanced practice provider and device programming support allocated to the Raleigh practice, named operating room block time at both sites, and referral development support for the new service.
