HJF is seeking a Functional Capabilities Technician to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. The Contractor shall conduct basic and applied proteomic and metabolomic research on current and emerging threats at BSL-2, supporting the BD and infectious disease countermeasure mission. The Contractor shall provide expertise in sample preparation techniques, method development, operation of proteomic and metabolomic instrumentation, and analysis of large datasets.
This position supports the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) Technical Research Support Services at Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD. USAMRIID collaborates with various military, government, and private organizations to protect the Warfighter from biological threats, investigate disease outbreaks, and develop medical countermeasures.

- Perform sample preparation on various matrices, including inactivated cells, tissues, viral particles, biofluids, etc., using techniques like purification, homogenization, dialysis, and others.
- Develop and perform LC-MS methods for detecting and characterizing proteins, peptides, metabolites, and small molecules; perform SDS-PAGE experiments.
- Develop and execute data analysis workflows for identifying and quantifying analytes, and analyzing post-translational modifications.
- Maintain research methods, SOPs, and data records; manage a sample inventory database.
- Participate in weekly lab meetings, assist in research development, and prepare technical reports and manuscripts. May present at scientific conferences outside normal hours.
- Maintain an orderly laboratory environment, conduct equipment management, and assist in training personnel.
- Communicate experimental data and issues with supervisors; coordinate with maintenance and vendors for technical support.
- Prepare monthly progress reports for the TPOC.
- Ensure laboratory compliance, participate in decontamination, waste disposal, and equipment maintenance. Escort engineers during visits.
- Support biosurveillance and training missions, potentially involving travel.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree with 7 years' related experience or Master's Degree with 3 years' related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of complex lab procedures.
- Ability to meet project deadlines.
- Good communication and analytical skills.
- US Citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.
- Up-to-date on routine adult immunizations; negative TB test if working with research participants.
- Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.; stand or sit for prolonged periods.
- Primarily in a laboratory setting.
- Annual salary ranges from $57,650 to $93,100, based on experience and education.
