Prepares food orders as they come into the kitchen during service times for breakfast and lunch. Prepares foods for next meal and / or next day when not preparing menu items for the current meal. At times prepares food for special events and parties and/or evening functions to occur at the facility.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare pancakes, waffles, sandwiches, bacon, sausage, tacos, special menu items and other regular menu items to order.
- Prepare soups, fruit, and items for the next meal and / or next day.
- Ensure the food line is stocked with sliced meats, cheese, and other items.
- Organize, consolidate, and rotate all food items.
- Slice and weigh out specified unit portions of meats, cheeses, and other foods.
- Make food items to exact recipe specifications, calculate ingredient amounts, scale recipes, and measure and weigh precise amounts.
- Accurately label all stored food items by description, date, and name initials to ensure quality control.
- Transport fruit and other food items from the office area and/or refrigerated cooler to the kitchen area.
- Wash utensils, tools, slicers, bowls, and other items as used and clean the area at the end of the day.
- Assist with dishwashing at times and kitchen breakdown.
- Package and label leftover food preparations at the end of the shift and send them to the Rescue Mission.
- Cross‑train with other kitchen positions such as baker and fill in when needed or when others are absent.
- Follow all food safety and health regulations and sanitation procedures.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Prior experience in food preparation/cooking preferred.
- Ability to work under time constraints, quickly and accurately.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to respond to requests and execute fulfillment.
- Physical strength to transport mixing bowls with ingredients and trash containers weighing up to 60 pounds.
- Willingness to work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Working Conditions
- Kitchens located in a renovated historic home with limited space.
- Use of cooking utensils, knives, ovens, stoves, blenders, meat slicer, cuisinart, waffle irons, pots, and pans.
- Prolonged periods of work at hot stove and grill; heat may be uncomfortable.
- Required to wear uniform, hair net, protective eyewear, non‑skid shoes, appropriate oven gloves, and protective gloves.
- May have to transport ingredients and/or trash in containers weighing up to 60 pounds.
- Work requires sufficient strength and endurance to meet the demands of high‑volume food preparation.
- The area is noisy and requires good receptive communication skills.
- Usually scheduled for an eight or nine‑hour day with flexibility for extended hours as needed.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $2.00 – $20.00 per hour. Actual compensation may vary based on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as geographic location.
