Role & responsibilities
The role
You will build a cross-platform product from an early stage: an Electron desktop app for macOS and Windows, companion apps for Android and iOS, a local data layer on SQLite, and cloud services on Google Cloud Platform. The work spans the full stack UI, local storage and sync, native device integration, packaging and release, and backend services.
This is hands-on, end-to-end engineering. You will scope work with the founder, write the acceptance criteria, build it, test it and ship it.
What you will do
- Build and ship the Electron desktop application (React, TypeScript) for macOS and Windows, including packaging, code signing, notarization and auto-update.
- Build the Android companion app in Android Studio (Kotlin) and the iOS companion app in Xcode (Swift), including device permissions, background behaviour and app store submission.
- Design and maintain the local SQLite data layer schema, migrations, indexing, and reliable sync between device, desktop and cloud without duplication or data loss.
- Build and operate backend services on GCP Cloud Run, Cloud SQL (Postgres), Pub/Sub, Secret Manager, IAM, CI/CD, logging and monitoring.
- Integrate with third-party APIs (CRMs and automation platforms) via OAuth 2.0 and webhooks.
- Work with sensitive personal data responsibly: encryption in transit and at rest, per-user deletion and export, audit logging.
- Write tests that match written acceptance criteria; treat error handling and recovery as core features, not afterthoughts.
- Collaborate with our existing engineer on shared infrastructure, code review and standards.
Preferred candidate profile
What we need
- Strong React and TypeScript, with real-world Electron experience you have shipped a signed desktop app to users on macOS and Windows, not just run one locally.
- Android development in Android Studio (Kotlin) and iOS development in Xcode (Swift), at a level where you can build, debug and release a production companion app on each.
- Deep SQLite knowledge schema design, migrations, performance at scale, and syncing local data with a cloud source of truth.
- Production GCP experience Cloud Run or GKE, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, IAM, Secret Manager, and deploying via Cloud Build or GitHub Actions.
- Node.js backend experience REST APIs, WebSockets, Postgres.
- A defensive engineering mindset you write the failing case first, handle offline and retry paths deliberately, and can read and extend someone else's codebase quickly.
- Comfortable working remotely with a small team and a founder who plans in detail and expects you to challenge the plan.
Good to have
- Native modules or device integration work in Electron (Bluetooth, audio, OS permissions).
- OAuth integrations with CRMs such as Pipedrive, HubSpot or Salesforce, or automation platforms such as Zapier, Make or n8n.
- App Store and Google Play release experience, including restricted-permission declarations.
- Exposure to SOC 2 or similar security programs.
- On-device speech-to-text or audio processing.
Hiring process
- Technical interview (20 minutes, video). Focused questions on React, Electron and SQLite.
- Paid take-home project + psychometric test. A short, scoped build task paid at a fixed rate, plus a basic online psychometric assessment.
- Codebase session. A working session on our actual codebase with the founder and our engineer; we decide from there.
