Job summary

Franklin Township School District is seeking an Evening Custodian to join our facilities team. This full-time role runs from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm and involves building security, cleaning, and routine maintenance to ensure safe, clean school environments.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of building operations and cleaning procedures, the ability to communicate effectively, and a commitment to safety. Criminal history check and U.S. citizen/resident status verification are required.

Qualifications

• Black Seal License preferred (or within 1 year of employment).
• Knowledge of plant operations and maintenance, cleaning and sanitizing methods and procedures, heating and ventilation, proper handling of hazardous materials preferred.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Verify doors and windows are secured and lights off except safety lights before leaving.
• Check daily that exit doors are operational and panic hardware functions during occupancy hours.
• Keep building and premises neat and clean; maintain floors, walls, and surfaces in good state.
• Operate HVAC systems to maintain appropriate temperatures and conserve energy.
• Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, library, and staff areas daily; empty waste baskets.
• Clean corridors, bathrooms, drinking fountains, and cafeteria areas; replenish supplies as needed.
• Move furniture and equipment as required; report major repairs to head custodian.
• Store and dispose of recyclables, trash, and debris per laws and procedures.
• Perform ongoing minor maintenance and grounds upkeep; assist with repairs as needed.
• Conduct weekend building checks on a rotating basis with other licensed custodians.

QUALIFICIATIONS

Building Security

• Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.

Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.

Building Maintenance

• Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Operates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Cleans and dusts classrooms, offices, library and faculty room daily; empties waste baskets in these areas.
• Cleans corridors after each school day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
• Cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures and floors daily, and replenishes paper and soap supplies as needed.
• Cleans and sanitizes all drinking fountains daily.
• Cleans cafeteria dining areas after use.
• Obeys all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation.
• Cleans chalkboards and/or whiteboards daily.
• Moves furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the facility manager or administrator.
• Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of recyclables, trash, waste, and debris.
• Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, making minor repairs and reporting major repair needs promptly to the head custodian.
• Cleans all windows on both the inside and outside as scheduled.
• Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
• Performs weekend building checks on a rotating basis with other licensed custodians.

Grounds Maintenance

• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish and debris.
• Shovels, plows, salts, and/or sweeps sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking areas as necessary.
• Displays the U.S. flag during school hours on days when school is in session.

Performs grounds-keeping chores including grass-cutting, tree-trimming, leaf raking and removal of litter, to maintain the grounds in a safe and attractive condition.

• May be required to wear a standard uniform selected by the district for security purposes.
