Responsibilities

• Leave detailed notes about the day and students.
• Consult with coordinators before starting non-planned procedures.
• Oversee student behavior in class, lunch, and recess.
• Follow school policies and maintain confidentiality.
• No earbuds or personal phones when students are present.

JOB DESCRIPTION

FULL TIME SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

QUALIFICATIONS:

30+ College credits or the international equivalent (ParaPathways Exam can be taken in lieu of), Indiana Sub permit or valid Indiana teaching license. Must be able to read and follow teacher prepared lesson plans and able to write detailed notes about the day. Must be able to speak and understand English when leading a class. Kind, flexible and able to maintain classroom control. Receptive to coaching and feedback from other staff and building administrators. Able to build rapport with students and staff. Must speak and act in a respectful, acceptable and safe manner. Detail oriented in following directions and maintaining student safety. Must successfully complete an HSE employment background check performed by a third-party provider.

JOB GOAL:

To enable each student to have a positive day while maintaining and protecting student safety at all times.

REPORTS TO:

District and Building Sub Coordinators

The Full Tme sub will either float each day in the district, if desired, or be assigned a mutually agreed upon home building with backups by grade level. The Full Time sub will typically report to their home building each day unless moved to cover open district needs. Full Time subs MUST be flexible to move on occasion, with dependable transportation, in case of a mid day building change. When moved from the home building, the Full Time sub will be paid mileage to and from their home school to the assigned school for the day. Daily floaters are paid mileage every day.

Full Time Subs are also eligible for optional insurance benefits and a matching contribution by the district into Indiana retirement.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Reports to the building sub coordinator upon arrival at the school building. Subs arrive 30 minutes before students.
• Review with the building sub coordinator all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
• Maintain as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
• Accurately take and report attendance as directed, via paper or Skyward.
• Teach the lesson outlined and described in the lesson plan prepared by the absent teacher or provided by building staff.
• Leave detailed notes about the day, students and any concerns or issues.
• Consult as appropriate, with the building sub coordinator, before initiating any teacher or other procedures not specified in the lesson plan and substitute teacher information prepared by the absent teacher.
• Assume responsibility for overseeing student behavior in class and during lunch and recess periods. Know where every student is at all times.
• If subbing in elementary, safely and accurately follow dismissal procedures and ensure every student returns home as designated.
• Leave detailed notes about the day, plans and students in writing or email.
• Follow all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
• Maintain the confidentiality of the position.
• No Earbuds allowed in the classroom when students are present; must be fully engaged at all times
• No personal cell phone usage allowed when students are present; must be fully engaged at all times
• Must cancel prior to 6 AM when possible; let district sub coordinator and/or building know if going to be late or unable to report to work
