Job summary

The Hughes Educational Center in Danville, VA is seeking a Teacher Assistant to join its day school program. This full-time role supports students with low student-to-teacher ratios and specialized programming designed to improve socialization and adaptive skills.

Responsibilities include supervising students, supporting living skills, documenting progress, and assisting with behavioral and educational plans. Benefits include comprehensive medical plans, PTO, and growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's Degree in a Human Services field of study preferred
• Hold a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
• Experience working with individuals with special needs preferred
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; able to sit, bend, kneel or stand for extended periods
• Willing to be a team player and supportive of the facility's philosophy and objectives
• Completion of Handle With Care & Verbal De-Escalation Training and First Aid/CPR per policy

Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision and care for students in a classroom setting
• Provide daily living skills direction and demonstrations to students at varying ability levels
• Deliver positive intervention, set limits, and guide students as needed
• Document student progress clearly and promptly
• Follow individual education plans and interventions with fidelity
• Maintain professional boundaries with residents and staff
• Model appropriate behavior for students
• Assist in management of aggressive behavior
• Support implementation of alternative educational and behavioral programs
• Assist in identification of social/behavioral issues
