Job summary

TX-STAR Speech Language Services is hiring a full-time school-based American Sign Language Interpreter for a Houston-area opportunity. The role requires ASL fluency and a commitment to providing accessible education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

You will interpret in classrooms and campus activities, collaborating with teachers and staff to support communication access and student independence within the school environment. This role emphasizes confidentiality and professional standards.

Qualifications

• Fluency in American Sign Language is required.
• Strong expressive, receptive, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential.
• Dependable, professional, and adaptable approach to working in school environments.
• Previous educational interpreting experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide American Sign Language interpretation during classroom instruction and other school-based activities.
• Interpret spoken English into ASL and signed communication into spoken English.
• Support communication access during lessons, assessments, meetings, assemblies, and campus events.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, special education personnel, administrators, and other school staff.
• Adapt interpreting approaches to meet individual student communication needs and classroom settings.
• Help students build independence, self-confidence, and self-advocacy skills.
• Facilitate communication during ARD and IEP meetings when requested.
• Maintain student confidentiality and follow district procedures, FERPA requirements, and professional standards.
• Keep accurate service records, schedules, and other required documentation.
• Demonstrate professionalism, consistency, and flexibility throughout the school day.
