Unit Overview
The PACU at GW Hospital is a high-acuity unit caring for patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical and diagnostic procedures. Our team monitors patients during the critical transition from the operating room to recovery, handling diverse cases ranging from general surgery and orthopedics to trauma and cardiac procedures.
Position Summary
PACU RNs at GW Hospital are highly skilled clinicians responsible for the safe recovery of patients emerging from anesthesia. Nurses in this unit must be confident in airway management, pain control, hemodynamic stability, and post-op education.
Main Tasks
- Monitor and assess post-anesthesia patients’ vitals and recovery status
- Manage airways, IV infusions, pain, and nausea
- Recognize and respond rapidly to post-operative complications
- Communicate clearly with OR teams, anesthesiologists, and families
- Educate patients and families prior to discharge or transfer
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation
- Participate in quality and safety initiatives and team debriefings

Required
Qualifications
- Current RN license in the District of Columbia (or eligible)
- BLS and ACLS certification (AHA)
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in PACU, ICU, or Emergency Department
Preferred
- CPAN or CAPA certification
- BSN from an accredited program
- Experience with high-acuity post-operative patients
