The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for a Full-time Principal Faculty position to teach Filmmaking in the undergraduate program Film & Video within the Department of Media Arts.
The ideal candidate will be rooted in storytelling and have a holistic approach to filmmaking. The Faculty will teach a range of visual storytelling tools, technologies, and innovative ideations. Faculty will work closely with the Department Chairs and Film Centre Director to ensure the program remains vibrant, relevant, and responsive to conceptual developments and emerging technologies. Strong organizational, collaborative, and professional skills are required. A successful applicant will have a deep passion for education and possess a strong desire to advance new technologies into the curriculum. Candidates should have expertise in either narrative fiction, documentary, or experimental film, and maintain an active professional creative practice by engaging in meaningful research and creative work. At MICA, students discover how to tell stories through the lens of independent filmmaking. Film students are taught the skills, empowered with resources and mentorship to create films and media productions in their own voice. Students are challenged to create meaningful work with artistic integrity and social purpose. MICA’s Film & Video Program offers opportunities to explore documentary, experimental, and fictional filmmaking, through analog and digital processes. Each student is encouraged to push creative boundaries and develop a portfolio. The program emphasizes student centered storytelling, learning a holistic approach to filmmaking, understanding and demonstrating through hands‑on learning and practice the roles throughout the entire production pipeline. Our curriculum covers creative and technical implementation of industry‑standard software, emerging digital and trusted legacy analog cinematic tools, and industry‑standard stages of production to prepare students for large collaborative productions and small independent projects. Through Baltimore’s vibrant film community, students create valuable real‑world opportunities and networks to launch their careers as visual storytellers. The shared Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and MICA Film Centre is situated inside the historic Centre Theatre in the Station North Arts & Entertainment District, a neighborhood adjacent to MICA's main campus. Students studying at the Film Centre engage with a collaborative network of media practitioners, and gain from their immersion in Baltimore’s vibrant arts scene as they prepare for sustainable careers in film and media.
Full-time Principal Faculty teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from introductory First Year Experience (FYE) to graduate coursework, participate in departmental service, undertake committee membership, and are expected to maintain an ongoing professional practice.
The faculty are represented by the SEIU Local 500.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and college policy ranging from $56,246 to 146,325.
